Whitko Boys Fall At Central Noble

December 6, 2017 at 2:52 p.m.

ALBION – After coming back once, Whitko gave up a big run in a short time that was the difference in its 62-50 non-conference boys basketball loss at Central Noble Tuesday night.

The Wildcats trailed by as many as seven points, 24-17, midway through the second quarter, then came back to take a 25-24 lead when Spence Sroufe drove the lane for a bucket with 48 seconds to go before halftime.

Ridley Zolman drained one of his five three-pointers just before the buzzer to give the Cougars the lead at intermission.

On Whitko’s first possession of the third quarter, Shad Ebbinghouse drilled a three to put the Wildcats in front 30-28.

Central Noble answered with a 14-0 run over the next 2-1/2 minutes, aided by four Wildcat turnovers against the Cougar full-court press and despite two timeouts by Whitko coach Eli Henson, one of which prevented another turnover. After a third timeout the Wildcats stopped the bleeding, but never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.

Whitko had 19 turnovers in the game, and they came in bunches. The Wildcats gave up the ball eight times in falling behind early, and then the four in the decisive run hurt the most. Henson said those are things that must be corrected for his team to reach its full potential.

“We had a lot of careless turnovers. We didn’t know where the ball was supposed to go against the press, and defensively in the half-court we didn’t have any help when we got beat off the dribble,” Henson said.

“Those are things we can and will fix.”

Senior River West led all scorers with 24 points on 11-of-20 shooting, despite having multiple defenders hanging on his every move. The other 26 points were split among six Whitko players, with Sroufe getting seven.

“After the game I told them ‘we need some scorers.’ River can’t do it all, and every game he’s carrying the load,” Henson said. “He’s working his butt off in there, doing everything he can. He just needs some guys to help him out when he gets double-teamed.”

Sroufe had a game-high 10 rebounds for Whitko.

Trey Phillips had 19 points and Zolman 17 for the Cougars, who ended Whitko’s season in the Westview Sectional last season with a buzzer-beater.

Central Noble won the junior varsity game 47-44. Statistics were not available as of press time.

Whitko will take a 2-2 record into Thursday’s game against West Noble in Ligonier.
