He was born June 7, 1937, in North Liberty, to Markwood I. and Alice Lucile Starner Surface. On March 4, 1961, in Edgewood, both of his grandparents officiated his wedding to Beverly J. Smith; she survives.
He retired as a foreman at Kimble Glass, Warsaw, where he worked his entire career. He also enjoyed farming with Jim Wise and spending time in the fields during the spring and fall.
He graduated from Mentone High School in 1955. He was a member of Mentone United Methodist Church and a former member of Mentone Lions Club. He and his wife enjoyed wintering in Brownsville, Texas, and he volunteered there restoring many vehicles and planes for display in the Commemorative Air Force Museum.
He always enjoyed fishing, woodworking, watching the Chicago Cubs, and attending many of his grandchildren’s sporting events. Many in the community knew him and lovingly called him Dad-Daddy.
