The Warsaw Tigers put together quite a rally Saturday night, but, as coach Doug Ogle said, it was just too late.

In a 44-36 loss to the visiting Huntington North Vikings, Warsaw trailed 34-8 early in the third quarter. The Tigers then scored the game’s next 20 points, cutting the deficit to six when junior Jaylen Reese converted a pair of free throws with 2:02 remaining in the game.

Huntington North scored eight of their 10 points in the fourth quarter at the charity stripe and held off the Tigers, who fell to 2-2 with a pair of home losses over the weekend.

The Vikings improved to 4-0.

“We did kind of, finally, wake up and start playing tougher and better, it was just too late,” said Ogle, whose team made just 24 percent of its shot attempts.

“Our first half defensively was bad. We had talked at length about not letting Zach Daugherty catch and shoot, and in their first two offensive possessions he makes three-pointers. We made it clear, it was just a lack of focus.

“We shot poorly in the first half, we rebounded poorly, and we struggled defensively. In terms of the rebounding and defense in the first half, by Tiger Basketball standards, I was embarrassed with our lack of focus, our lack of talk, our lack of awareness. I don’t like to say that to our players, I don’t like to say that I’m embarrassed, but I was.”

Warsaw was 12 of 51 from the field overall, 3 of 21 from three-point range, and 9 of 10 at the free throw line in the loss.

While the Tigers were struggling through a 3-of-19 performance in the first half, Huntington North made 11 of 16 shots in the first 16 minutes and built a 20-point cushion.

The Vikings led 16-3 after one quarter of play, 28-8 at halftime and 34-16 going into the final frame.

In their 20-0 run, the Tigers scored the final eight points of the third quarter and the first 12 of the fourth quarter.

“We can be encouraged by some of the things we saw in the last quarter and a half during that run, but we’ve got to find a group that wants to compete and that can be physical consistently,” said Ogle.

“We should probably start over in terms of looking for players that want to compete, basically, and will play the way we want to play.”

Daugherty, the player Ogle wanted his team’s defense to focus on, was 5 of 6 from the field overall, 3 of 4 from the arc, and 2 of 4 at the free throw line en route to a game-high 15 points.

Trey Williams scored 10 points for the Vikings, while Sawyer Stoltz and Mitchell Geller chipped in with seven and six, respectively.

Junior Tyler Metzinger led Warsaw with nine points, while classmate Nolan Groninger and sophomore Brian Elliott finished with eight and seven points, respectively.

Reese and seniors Jack Rhoades and Zach Riley rounded out the Tigers’ scoring with four points each.

Warsaw won the JV game 65-27. Wyatt Amiss scored 12 points in the win, while Blake Marsh tallied 11 and Keagan Larsh 10.

The Tigers will be in action again Friday when they travel to Lake Central.
