Shipp Leads Lady Tigers To Win

December 4, 2017 at 5:19 p.m.

It may not have been textbook offensive basketball, but Warsaw girls coach Lenny Krebs will take any win, including the ugly ones like Saturday’s 48-34 non-conference victory over Portage at the Tiger Den.

It took a while to get any semblance of offense going. Warsaw didn’t score until 1:42 was left in the first quarter, and even then that first bucket merely tied the game at 2.

Maddie Ryman picked up her second foul late in the quarter, and her replacement, Halle Shipp, got the ice-breaking bucket then hit a pair of threes on her way to eight quick points in the quarter and a 10-2 Tiger lead at the end of the period.

“We were Tiger Talking before the game about Halle. She was due for that breakout game again, and quite frankly, she came in and did it,” said Krebs.

Shipp added a third trey early in the second quarter, but the Lady Tigers couldn’t break away from the visitors. Each team seemed more than willing to grind out whatever offense it could while working hard on defense.

“Today was a struggle from the get-go. Going back to halftime, I think we had 21 points — 16 of them I think came from our bench at that point in time,” said Krebs. “We were just struggling to put the ball in the basket.

“You’ve got to learn to win ugly if you’re going to advance in the tournament, and that’s what we did today.”

After leading the team in scoring in Thursday’s win at Oregon-Davis, Emma Bohnenkamper was held scoreless in five shots from the field and didn’t make it to the free throw line. She tied Kacy Bragg for game-high honors with five rebounds, and that was enough to please her coach.

“Emma was upset because she didn’t think that she contributed tonight like she did, and my comment to her was ‘your performance was different; it wasn’t any less,’” said Krebs. “I think it’s important that Emma understands that,” Krebs said.

Recent, Lady Tiger teams have shown a great deal of pride in defensive effort, and Krebs said despite his reputation, he knows the importance of solid D in the big scheme of things.

“Contrary to what a lot of people think about a Krebs-coached team and how we like to score points, I pride myself on the defensive side of the basketball. I thought our defense did a great job,” Krebs said. “We made them take some low-percentage shots. I’m sure they could go back and hit some of those shots during the game, but I felt like we contested pretty much every shot we needed to there in the first half.

“Any time you’re struggling to score offensively it’s nice that you can fall back on the defense and make sure you keep a game competitive until that offense can get going.”

Seven players scored for Portage, with Skylar Flanagan tops at seven points. Alexis Switzer chipped in with six points.

In the junior varsity contest, Kensie Ryman scored 12 points for the Lady Tigers in their 38-34 loss to Portage.

Warsaw (6-2) will travel to Huntertown to take on Carroll Tuesday night.
