NORTH MANCHESTER – A North Manchester man is being preliminarily charged with attempted murder and other charges after a violent series of attempted carjackings.

At about 12:45 a.m. Monday, the North Manchester Police Department received a report of a vehicle theft that had just occurred at Huck’s gas station, 104 Wabash Road, North Manchester.

While attempting to find the vehicle, officers were told it had been taken by Samuel Lopez, 28, North Manchester, and that a woman inside was taken with the vehicle.

She was able to exit the vehicle after being stabbed in the chest, according to a NMPD news release.

Lopez allegedly then drove to Strauss Feeds, 648 E. CR 1100N, and got into a semi, asking for a ride. The driver took him to Manchester Trading Post, 3 W. Ind. 114, where Lopez allegedly battered the driver, got out of the truck and then attempted to take control of another vehicle, police said.

North Manchester Police Sgt. Nate Birch was then able to take Lopez into custody.

The woman was transported by Parkview EMS to a Fort Wayne hospital.

The news release said Lopez is being preliminary charged with attempted murder, criminal confinement, robbery, battery on a pregnant woman, battery with a deadly weapon, resisting law enforcement, battery and operating a motor vehicle while never licensed. Lopez is being held in the Wabash County Jail.

North Manchester police were assisted by the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana State Police, Parkview EMS and the North Manchester Fire Department.
