Lady Warriors Too Much For SB Adams

Wawasee then scored the next 13 points and cruised to a 68-35 non-conference basketball win at the Hardwood Tepee Tuesday night.
The 68 points is 15 more than the Lady Warriors have scored in any other game so far this season. Wawasee’s 37 points at halftime matched its score in Tuesday’s 52-37 loss at West Noble.
It was the highest point total for Wawasee since Nov. 21, 2014 in a 74-6 win over South Bend Career Academy. Over the last eight seasons, Wawasee has scored 68 or more points just five times, with two of those coming against Career Academy and two others against Adams.
“This was a nice confidence boost for us offensively,” Wawasee coach Matt Carpenter said. “Just to get some good ball movement, some good people movement and be able to execute.
“Sometimes this season we’ve had good ball movement and good people movement, but we haven’t executed. Sometimes we’ve been stagnant on offense and we’ve tried to shoot our way out of it, and we haven’t been able to do that this year.”
The Lady Warriors have been using their practice time in a rather unique way lately
“We’ve had the opportunity to practice with and play against the freshman boys team, and they’re off to a nice 3-0 start this year,” Carpenter said. “They move well, they’re athletic, they’re long, and you can’t simulate that very well in a girls practice right now.
“The girls really relished the opportunity to practice against those guys, and the guys get something out of it. We had a good practice (Wednesday) against them for a while, and I felt like being able to do it against teams that move really well, that have some length and athleticism, gives us a sense of confidence that we can do that against anyone.”
After Wednesday’s practice, Wawasee went out to a 19-6 lead after a quarter, and continually expanded the lead from there. The Lady Warriors forced 26 Adams turnovers and outrebounded the Lady Eagles 31-22.
Wawasee was paced by Casey Schroeder with 17 points, and Aubrey Kuhn hit a pair of three-pointers on her way to a 15-point night. Hannah-Marie Lamle had 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds, three on the offensive end. Nine of the 10 players who appeared in the game for Wawasee scored.
Carpenter said his team is making good progress, but he’s not concerned about the Lady Warriors peaking too soon.
“We’re showing growth. We’re not where we need to be yet, but I feel like we’ve grown up a little bit in the last couple of weeks,” he said. “We’ve got a tough conference schedule starting next week, so hopefully it’s enough.”
Wawasee opens Northern Lakes Conference play Tuesday, hosting defending champion Northridge.
Wawasee won the junior varsity contest 48-24 over Adams. Morgan Adkins had 12 points, with Rhian Galloway and Abby Steiner adding nine points each.
