The Lady Lancers (0-1-1) outshot CCU 49-10 but were denied from victory at 1st Source Bank Field.
“There are many very complimentary takeaways from tonight. There are a few things we must change. We need to convert our chances. Goals win games,” said Grace head coach Michael Voss. “The answer is simple, and the solution will take time. We will move forward and press to unlock our abilities.”
Grace pummeled the Eagles (0-0-1) for 20 shots in the first half, but CCU went into halftime with the lead. The Eagles scored off a free kick, finishing off a loose ball in the 36th minute.
At halftime, Grace had a 20-5 shot advantage despite trailing 1-0 on the scoreboard. Grace also had four of the five corner kicks before halftime.
The Lady Lancers continued to dominate possession in the second half and created dangerous opportunities to score. The game-tying goal came in the 76th minute. Kristen Bellinger sent in a corner kick from the right side of the field, and Hannah Tkacz connected for the goal inside the penalty box at the 75:22 mark.
Grace ramped up its attack over the final minutes in pursuit of a late winner. Five shots for Grace over the last 15 minutes were denied, including three from Liz Van Wormer and a short free kick from Bellinger.
Overtime was much of the same. Grace pounded out 12 shots in the two overtime sessions, including seven shots on goal.
In the last 90 seconds of the match alone, the Lady Lancers had four shots on goal that were saved. Van Wormer and Autumn Raulerson each had two of those shots.
“I am happy with the players on this team. They continue to give their best effort and improve in their thinking. They can see many of the pieces of the way we want to do possession, and they are determined to achieve it,” Voss said. “It is not where I want it. I must give a better plan for them and provide the resources so they can reach it. I will do better, and they will improve.”
For the game, 16 different players recorded a shot for Grace. Van Wormer took seven shots, and Raulerson added six.
Jenni Phillips and Corinne Villalobos finished with five shots each, and McKenna Cruz, Allison Vroon and Sacia Hanson each tried four shots.
The Lady Lancers will aim for their first win of the season on Saturday. Grace hosts Hannibal-LaGrange at 1 p.m. at 1st Source Bank Field.
