Homestead Spikers Sweep Lady Tigers

The way Warsaw volleyball coach Rick Ashmore saw it, being swept Monday night had more to do with what his Lady Tiger didn't do than what Homestead did do.

Warsaw struggled with unforced errors, and, as Ashmore said, handed things to the Lady Spartans, who won 25-19, 25-16, 25-15.

Warsaw fell to 4-3 on the season, while the Lady Spartans improved to 2-3.

“We probably had 42 unforced errors,” said Ashmore. “We had numerous opportunities to take control of the match and we didn't. In the first two games, we had 22 hitting errors. That's a lot of missed points and serves. You're not gonna win volleyball games like that.”

The teams battled back and forth in the opening game before Homestead pulled away late.

The Lady Spartans trailed 17-14 but tallied eight consecutive points to take control and eventually a 1-0 lead in the match.

Warsaw never held a lead in either the second or third games.

“It's what we didn't do,” said Ashmore. “We let them seize the momentum with unforced errors. We handed it to them and they took advantage. They did some nice things, but everything we had talked about and said they were gonna do, they did. We just, for whatever reason, didn't want to adjust to it.

“Things that we normally do, we just didn't well at all tonight. We can hit the ball well, we've got great setting ... things like that. We just didn't show it tonight.”

Erin Peugh tallied 15 digs for the Lady Tigers, while Alexie Day had eight kills and three blocks, Kennedy Lauck four kills and four blocks, Hanna Leach four kills and Betty Barnett three blocks.

The Warsaw JV team beat Homestead 25-12, 25-22 and improved to 3-0.

The Lady Tigers are in action again Saturday in a tournament hosted by Mishawaka High School.

Payton Krahn led Homestead with seven kills, while teammate Emily Wilcox had four.
