Lady Tigers Drop One, Tie Another In Tough Soccer Invitational
LAKEVILLE – Playing in the St. Joseph Invitational girls soccer tournament Saturday, Warsaw dropped a 5-0 match to Penn, the top-ranked team in the country, and played to a 2-2 draw with Valparaiso, the 17th-ranked team in the state, at Newton Park.
Abby Steffensmeier and Brenna Shipley each had a goal and Brenna Buhrt an assist in the Valparaiso match for the Tigers.
After the Valparaiso match Tiger coach Jonathan Hoover said “this is a game that we felt we should have won, but we let slip away. Fatigue definitely played a factor after playing Penn in the morning, but our girls fought through and came back with a big goal in the end to get the draw.
“Anna Grill, Olivia Herman, Dayle Harvey, and Brenna Shipley were solid in the back against some tough competition this weekend. Brenna Buhrt and Delaney Taylor have proven to be one of the best midfield tandems in the state, and Alex Koontz is getting stronger and stronger each day.”
Warsaw will take a 1-2-1 record, all against ranked teams, into its Northern Lakes Conference opener against visiting Plymouth Tuesday.
Tiger Boys Soccer Rolls
Eric Ocock had a hat trick, with Garrett Reinholt and Jorge Rico adding two goals each for Warsaw in its 12-0 rout of visiting Maconaquah in a non-conference boys soccer match Saturday.
Tedros Berelsman had a goal and an assist in the match, and Elian Mejia scored a goal assisted by his brother Eliud. Ethan Grill and Kyle Hayward also scored goals for the Tigers.
Now 2-0-1, Warsaw will play a non-conference match at Fort Wayne Northrop Tuesday.
Minutemen Roll Past Wawasee
DUNLAP – Concord scored in the first five minutes of its home match with Wawasee, and went on to win the Northern Lakes Conference boys soccer contest 5-0 Saturday over the visiting Warriors.
“The team struggled to fight back after going down early to a tough Concord team. We were not able to find much attack. This was the first big test for our team, stumbled quite a bit and hopefully we can take this as a learning opportunity for the next big games,” Wawasee coach Jordan Sharp said.
For the second time, Wawasee’s boys soccer match scheduled for today has been cancelled.
The Warriors were originally scheduled to play Hamilton, but the Marines aren’t fielding a team this season. Central Noble was booked instead, and Sunday afternoon it was announced the Eagles weren’t coming, but no reason was given.
There was no announcement regarding a match to fill in the space as of this morning.
Wawasee will next play Saturday when it hosts West Noble.
Lady Warriors Fall
EMMA – Jenny Camarena scored Wawasee’s lone goal in a 4-1 loss at Westview Saturday in a non-conference girls soccer match.
Wawasee (1-2) will host Manchester Tuesday at Warrior Field.
Squires Beat Vikings
NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester took off to a 4-0 lead, then held off visiting Huntington North for a 4-2 win in non-conference boys soccer Saturday.
Nathan Self, Noah Beck, Isaiah Davis and Caleb Stout scored for the Squires. Harley Kruschwitz had three assists in the match.
The Squires (2-0) are set to host Caston Tuesday.
Lady Squire VB Splits In Tournament
ELWOOD – Manchester’s girls volleyball team split four matches at the Elwood Invitational Saturday, finishing in fifth place overall.
The Lady Squires fell 25-10, 25-18 to Danville and 22-25, 25-21, 15-12 to host Elwood Manchester then rebounded to beat Southern Wells 25-18, 27-25 and Lewis Cass 20-25, 25-14, 15-8 in the final round.
Emma West had 38 digs, three assists, three aces and a kill in the tournament for Manchester. Kendra Kline was credited with 66 assists, 25 digs, three aces, a block and a kill. Sydney Day had 22 kills and 11 digs, and Kara Kline had 27 digs, 16 kills, five blocks and a pair of aces.
Manchester will host Adams Central on Tuesday.
Zebras Down LCA
WINONA LAKE – Garrett McCoomb gave Lakeland Christian an early lead, but visiting Rochester came back with a pair of goals to take a 2-1 boys soccer win Saturday.
LCA (1-1) will take on Bethany Christian in Waterford Mills near Goshen on Thursday.
Lady Wildcats Fall At West Noble
LIGONIER – Julia Seifert scored on a breakaway in the first half for Whitko, but it was the only time the Lady Wildcats found the net in a 4-1 loss at West Noble in a non-conference girls soccer match Saturday.
Stephanie Baughman recorded seven saves in goal for Whitko.
The Lady Wildcats will travel to LaVille for a match today.
Lady Tiger VB Splits At Kokomo Invite
KOKOMO – Warsaw finished fourth in the Kokomo Invitational volleyball tournament Saturday.
The Lady Tigers swept host Kokomo 25-15, 25-16 in the first round, and Frankfort 25-18, 25-11 in the second match.
Warsaw then dropped a three-set match to Fishers, 25-13, 19-25, 15-3, before falling to Hamilton Southeastern, 25-15, 25-15.
Now 4-2, Warsaw will host Homestead in a non-conference match today.
Trojan Tennis Splits At Marian Tourney
MISHAWAKA – Triton finished third in the Mishawaka Marian Invitational boys tennis tournament Saturday, falling 5-0 to the host Knights before beating LaVille by the same score in the consolation match.
At No. 1 singles, Carter Kuntz lost 6-0, 6-0 to Marian’s Cam Rafinski, then beat LaVille’s Doug Cashen, 6-1, 6-0. Jared Bules lost 6-2, 6-0 to Josh Bussan of Marian, then defeated Dan klingman of LaVille, 7-5, 6-0.
The Trojans’ No. 1 doubles duo of Keygan Mosier and Chase Butler lost 6-2, 6-4 to Michael Gray and Dominik Rafinski of Marian, then rebounded to blank LaVille’s Zach Rutherford and David Clayton in 12 games.
The No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles matches against LaVille were won by forfeit.
Triton will take a 3-2 record into a Hoosier North Athletic Conference match Tuesday, when it hosts North Judson.
