BOURBON – One longtime Triton High School football fan commented on his way out of the stands “I’m not sure that new scoreboard works. I think the points are reversed.”

But it’s true, Trojan fans. Triton opened the 2017 football season in style, whipping the South Newton Rebels 70-0 Friday night.

Triton scored on 10 of 11 possessions  and did not punt in the game. It was the most lopsided win for the Trojans since a 63-0 sectional victory over River Forest on Oct. 19, 2007. In fact, the Triton boys basketball team scored more than 70 points just once last season, in a 79-38 win over South Bend Career Academy Dec. 6, 2016.

On the opening possession, Tye Orsund brought down a 34-yard pass from James “Bo” Snyder on a 50-50 ball. Four plays later Orsund caught a 9-yard touchdown pass to start the scoring machine.

On the second possession, Ethan Berry capped a 65-yard scoring drive with a three-yard touchdown run. But the key play in the game came the next time Triton had the ball.

South Newton punted the ball to the Trojan 10-yard line, and on 3rd and seven from the 13, Snyder broke a tackle on what looked like a sure sack and found Delano Shumpert wide open along the right sideline. Shumpert outran Rebel Brody Derflinger for the 87-yard touchdown, and the rout was on.

Snyder completed just five passes on the night, but had 187 yards and three scores. He had more chances to throw the ball than his 13 attempts would indicate, according to Trojan coach Ron Brown.

“Bo did a great job of audibling out and taking what the defense was giving him,” he said.

Things went so well for Triton that when the tide would start to shift, Brown could afford to call time out to make coaching-based corrections. For example, he called a timeout after Derflinger rushed for a first down on consecutive plays, and Brown used another stoppage when Triton’s defense was called for penalties on back-to-back plays.

“We want to make sure we take care of mistakes early on, and that we can set the right tone here. We want to make sure we’re doing things correctly.”

One of the beneficiaries of Snyder’s audibles was senior running back Max Slusser. He celebrated his 18th birthday by carrying the ball 17 times for 202 yards and a touchdown.

Ethan Berry scored three touchdowns on just six carries. Orsund also caught a flanker screen, then ran 49 yards for a touchdown. He finished with three catches for 91 yards and the two scores.

In the fourth quarter, Trenton Kreft and Hunter McIntyre scored touchdowns to insure the new scoreboard was broken in properly.

“Things were going well tonight,” said Brown. “We pretty much did the wish of our athletic director Mason McIntyre and we put a bunch of points on the board. We wanted to see how many points the new board would hold, so there you go.”

Triton (1-0) will open Hoosier North Athletic Conference play next week when it hosts LaVille. The game was moved from the LaVille campus due to construction work there.
