Making his first start at quarterback since 8th grade, Warsaw Community High School senior Tristan Larsh certainly answered the challenge Friday night.

In a season-opening 21-6 win over the Columbia City Eagles at Fisher Field, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound Larsh wasted little time in showing what he can do with the speed that qualified him for the state track and field meet in June in the 100, 200 and 4x100.

Larsh, who played receiver last season while record-setting quarterback Michael Jensen was under center, raced 63 yards to paydirt on the third play of the game in front of a large Senior Night crowd.

He finished the game with 130 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 13 attempts, and also completed 7 of 12 passes for 27 yards in a passing game the Tigers used to keep Columbia City’s defense honest.

“He made big steps from last week (in the scrimmage at Tippecanoe Valley), he’s getting a grasp of what we’re trying to do with him,” Warsaw coach Phil Jensen said of Larsh.

“And boy, Will (McGarvey) really started pounding it, the offensive line started doing it. The first half we didn’t block well on the perimeter, which took some things away, but we got that fixed in the second half. That creates problems when you’ve got speed, and the offensive line is getting it done.

“I’m real pleased with Tristan and Will, but I’m also real pleased with our offensive line ... and how about our defense?”

McGarvey, a 6-foot, 200-pound senior running back who was a 1,000-yard rusher last year, tallied 136 yards and a score on 23 attempts.

After being held to 12 yards on seven carries in the first half, McGarvey punished Columbia City in the second half, particularly on Warsaw’s first drive of the third quarter.

Following a 13-play Columbia City drive that started at the Eagles’ 20-yard line and stalled at the Tiger’s 30, McGarvey carried the ball on consecutive plays for 32, 8 and 30 yards to put Warsaw up 14-6 with 6:19 remaining in the third quarter.

Larsh accounted for the final score when he trotted in from 17 yards out with 2:11 left in the game.

Larsh said it was important for him and his teammates to come out confident, and also spoke highly of his offensive line, which Friday night included seniors Grant Wolfe, Jacob Rios, Dillon Estepp and Craig Miner, and junior Matt Shoemaker.

“I tried to put the nerves aside, because I knew that we needed to come out strong,” said Larsh. “We haven’t always been a first-half team in the past, so I knew that if I had confidence it would give everyone else confidence.

“The skill (position) players did really well, but our line played well, and they don’t get enough credit. They did the best I’ve seen them all summer, their hard work paid off. I was really happy with them ... I congratulated them and thanked them every time I could. They made those big plays happen.”

Warsaw’s defense also made some big plays, highlighted by senior Zach Riley’s two second-half interceptions.

Riley anchored a secondary that allowed just four receptions.

Columbia City quarterback Jacob Bolt finished the game 4 of 21 through the air for 75  yards, all of which went to Ethan Christen.

The Eagles did most of their damage on the ground, racking up 199 yards on 41 carries.

Bolt, who finished the game with 93 yards on 20 carries, scored Columbia City’s only touchdown when he barrelled his way in from a yard out with 28 seconds left in the first half.

The scoring play was setup by Jacob Wigent’s 80-yard run.

Wigent finished the game with 110 yards on 17 carries.

Columbia City hosts county rival Whitko Friday, while Warsaw travels to Kendallville to play the East Noble Knights.

“We’re pleased with where we’re at, but we’ve to got continue to get better because the schedule gets tougher and tougher and tougher,” said Jensen. “We’ve got to go to East Noble, and you talk about a quarterback, we’ll see that next week. And then we come home for Plymouth.

“I’m pleased with what we did ... big improvement from the scrimmage last week to this week, mostly with our enthusiasm and energy, but also with some execution.”
