WABASH – As good as advertised.

The Manchester Squires and football head coach Greg Miller saw firsthand Friday the juggernaut that Southwood’s offense is.

At the end of a 59-18 Three Rivers Conference loss to the Class 1A top 15 Knights, Miller gave the home team plenty of credit.

“Coming in, we knew they would be a good team, and it showed,” he said. “However, I feel like we did some positive things (tonight). I told the team they’ll be there in the film tomorrow morning … some areas to build on.”

Among those were the rushing of junior running back Delton Moore, who narrowly missed triple digits with 18 carries for 95 yards, and a respectable night for senior signal caller Hayes Sturtsman.

The Squires’ quarterback threw for 158 yards with 11 completions in 30 attempts, including finding junior wide receiver Robert McAtee, who found a seam in Southwood’s defense and hauled in a 60-yard score in the opening frame.

The Squires’ other two scores came from a second Sturtsman to McAtee connection, this time from six yards out in the second quarter, and sophomore Devin Marcum’s 8-yard touchdown scamper in the final stages of the fourth quarter.

Meanwhile, on the home side of Southwood’s field, it was all senior quarterback Carson Blair and a high-octane skills group that posted 20 points in the first quarter and 27 more in the second 12 minutes to salt away the Wabash County showdown.

Blair finished with six touchdown passes to go with 329 yards passing. His top target was classmate Peyton Texler, who hauled in seven receptions for 170 yards and three touchdowns while also wowing the home crowd with a burst of speed that led to a 78-yard kickoff return to paydirt.

Southwood’s ground attack was topped by sophomore Gabe Lloyd, who rushed for 126 yards on 16 carries, including a battering ram 67-yard gallop through several Squires defenders for a touchdown in the second half.

“Now, it’s time for us to bind together and get ready for Week 2 (a trip to Bluffton Friday),” Miller said. “We were able to get a lot of guys into the game tonight, which is a plus, and we had a lot of sophomores playing that got a taste of what they need to work on.”
