Warsaw Spikers Beat Huntington North

After a sluggish start, Warsaw rallied to win the last three sets and take a 23-25, 25-17, 25-11, 26-24 victory over Huntington North in a non-conference volleyball match Thursday evening at the Tiger Den.

Lady Tiger coach Rick Ashmore said the start, in which Warsaw blew a lead, was in part because of the mistakes his team made, and Huntington North being good enough to take full advantage of those miscues.

“We were up and missed some key serves at different times. The momentum switched to their side, and we had some unforced errors that you can’t have against solid teams,” Ashmore said.

“The fact that we’re such a young team is something we’re going to have to overcome. We got complacent and we needed to step it up.”

The youngest members of the team, freshmen middle hitters Betty Barnett and Kennedy Lauck, are filling a void left by an offseason injury to senior Nikki Parrett. Once the underclassmen settled in, they held their own against the experienced Lady Viking middle.

“We’re learning with two freshman middles. Huntington North is really solid in the middle, and I thought Kennedy took the big middle out, and that set the tone for them to not be able to run certain plays,” said Ashmore.

The second set saw Warsaw fall behind, then use a 6-0 run to take an 11-10 lead. After the game was tied at 13, Warsaw closed out with a 12-4 run.

Warsaw led wire-to-wire in the third set, using two five-point runs and a four-point run to put away the Lady Vikings.

Huntington North held a small lead throughout the latter part of the fourth set, and led 24-22 late. It looked like the match was headed to a fifth set, but junior Kacy Bragg came up with a pair of aces, and the Lady Tigers scored the last four points of the match to secure the win.

Ashmore was pleased with the grind-it-out attitude his team showed in avoiding a fifth set.

“It’s what we talked about all offseason, that we needed to develop a grit and a will to win. Everything is not going to go your way. We have to outwork every team we play,” he said.

“With the schedule we have, everybody we play is going to be good. We don’t have any easy teams on our schedule. Hopefully that will make us stronger for the postseason.”

Erin Peugh had 22 digs and four aces for Warsaw. Bragg finished with six aces and nine kills. Alexie Day had 13 kills and two solo blocks, and Hanna Leach added 11 kills in the winning cause.

The Lady Tigers will take a 2-0 record into the Kokomo Invitational Saturday.
