Warsaw Netters Fall To Penn

August 18, 2017 at 4:34 p.m.

There’s no embarrassment, said coach Rick Orban, in losing to a better team.

That’s one of the lessons Orban wants his Warsaw boys tennis team to take from Thursday night’s 5-0 loss to the always-tough Penn Kingsmen.

“Penn always has a really solid team,” said Orban, whose team opened the season the night before with a 4-1 win at Huntington North. “Their 1, 2, 3 singles is very good, and their 1 doubles is incredible.

“We’re young ... we’ve got some seniors, but they haven’t played varsity. So, everybody is still learning their positions. (Wednesday night) with the win at Huntington North we were able to learn some lessons from that, and I saw the guys actually apply a lot of it today. But when you play a team like we did today, you have to step up your game, you can’t be afraid to lose.

“Penn graduated a lot of guys from last year, but a lot of these kids played varsity a lot. There’s no embarrassment in getting beat by a better team. I never saw any of our kids give up. We just have to learn that if we’re gonna win against a really good team we have to have the confidence to just play our game, not panic when you’re down a couple of games, and that’s really the learning curve that we have to go through.”

The Kingsmen, who also won seven of the 12 JV?matches, won all five varsity matches in straight sets.

Aidan Sucharetza earned Penn’s first team point with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Caleb Williams at No. 3 singles.

At No. 2 singles, Will Thurin topped Warsaw’s Bailey Buhrt 6-1, 6-0.

In No. 1 singles action, the final contest to conclude, Penn’s AJ Antonelli beat Colton Lind 6-3, 6-2.

“He played a solid game,” Orban said of Lind. “Penn’s kid doesn’t miss, he doesn’t make unforced errors. He hits with a lot of top spin, keeps the ball deep in play and doesn’t go for high-risk shots.

“Colton was on the defense a lot tonight. I’d like to see him switch that up and go more for the big shots and go on the offense.”

In No. 1 doubles play, Eric Spaargaren and Aiden O’Day beat Warsaw’s Spencer Britton and Nolan Knight 6-4, 6-2.

On the No. 2 doubles court, Penn’s Nick Cosetti and Maity Spitters defeated Kyler Bartol and Reuben Williams 6-2, 6-2.

The Tigers are in action again Monday at Mishawaka Marian, and then open Northern Lakes Conference play by hosting Elkhart Memorial on Thursday.
