SYRACUSE – Early-season golf matches, particlarily those played before the start of the school year, tend to be a time to work on parts of a game prior to conference and sectional play.

Nobody was especially emotional about the Manchester Lady Squires’ 191-195 win over the Wawasee Lady Warriors at Maxwelton Golf Club Monday evening.

While both coaches were pointing toward September, one said he was disappointed in spite of a win, the other pleased with progress despite a loss.

“It wasn’t our best night. We made some swing changes over the weekend, just because it was our first time to practice,”?Manchester coach Josh Troyer said. “So we’re working on some things that will hopefully help us in September.

“Those things may have hurt us a little tonight, but Wawasee’s always a tough team. They still have that reputation, and they’re young, so  it was good to battle and win by four (shots) tonight.”

Sam Kissell paced Manchester with a 45, and Kelsey Eichenauer had a 47. Cora Barnett shot a 49, Lydia Little a 50 and Madyson Ulrey had a 57 for Manchester.

The Lady Squires knew they were in a tight match, according to Troyer, and the key to the win was not letting one mistake turn in to a bad run.

“We hung in there. We were in some rough spots, but we were able to recover,” Troyer said. “Sometimes we talk about limiting the damage and being able to walk away and not carry one bad hole into a second or third.”

Wawasee’s Jadison Rostochak was the match medalist with a 44. Belle Brunner had a 47, with Zoe White and Lesley Tayagua each shooting 52. Valerie Haessig had a 57 for the Lady Warriors.

Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone said he looks for improvement in the season’s first month, and he felt like he saw that from the Lady Warriors Monday.

“Jadison turned it around tonight, the 44 was her best round of the year so far,” he said. “Belle came through again tonight with a 47.  Our worst score was a 52, so for this point of the year we played pretty well.

“All the girls shot at or close to their best scores of the year. I don’t see too many negatives. We just need to work on our chipping and putting. But we’re getting better.”

Manchester is right back at it today, hosting Columbia City at Sycamore Golf Course at 5 p.m. Wawasee plays Whitko and host West Noble at South Shore in Syracuse on Wednesday.
