Banta Seeking Winona Council Seat
By Dan [email protected]
The retired teacher, who worked in California for 43 years before teaching at Lakeland Christian Academy in Winona Lake for six years, is making her first attempt at public office by filing to run in the upcoming Republican caucus that will fill the vacancy for the District 1 seat on Winona Lake’s town council.
Banta, 74, moved to her School Street neighborhood in Winona Lake 14 years ago to be closer to family.
Soon after moving to town, she registered to vote and has worked as a poll worker and volunteered for the Republican party.
Prior to that, she was involved in Republican politics in California, including serving as a Republican state delegate.
“I really believe people should be involved,” Banta said Friday afternoon.
“Government is of the people. If people are not involved, if they don’t know what’s going on, if they don’t bother to care, that’s not a good situation,” she said.
She said she’s come to love the town and sees numerous strong points.
“Winona Lake is a wonderful combination of great history and a forward looking community that has lots and lots of attributes,” Banta said. “You don’t find many small college towns that are tuned into art and leisure as this community it. It’s pretty unique.”
Banta said she isn’t entering the caucus with any pre-conceived proposals if elected, but did say she wants to see the town continue to support some of the good things already happening.
Keeping an eye on the town budget is another issue, she said.
“It’s a fine mix of moving ahead and doing it responsibly,” Banta said.
In summary, she added, “I’m just here to serve.”
Other candidates who have filed to run in the caucus include Kearstin Criswell and James Zachary.
The GOP caucus is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Winona Lake town hall.
Deadline for candidates to file for the caucus is 7 p.m. today.
