GOSHEN – A doubleheader between Grace’s softball team and Goshen came down to the final inning each game.
Fortunately for the Lady Lancers, Grace won both games in the last inning. The first game was won by Grace 6-3 in 10 innings, and the Lady Lancers secured the sweep with a 9-6 win in the second game.
In the opener, the Lady Lancers (23-20, 16-12 CL) prevailed in 10 innings. The score remained 2-2 through regulation.
Grace scored both of its runs in the third inning. Hannah Herbster doubled to plate Paige Hlutke, and Abby Mozingo hit a two-out single to score Herbster.
Neither team was able to produce a winning moment in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
In the 10th inning, Grace broke the game open. Hlutke and Herbster scored to give Grace the lead, and later Kyleigh Garner drove in two more with a two-out single to put the Lady Lancers ahead by four.
Goshen managed to score one run in the bottom of the 10th, but Hannah England refused to allow the Maple Leafs (9-23, 6-20 CL) to come any closer.
England pitched the final six innings from the mound to get the win. She allowed one run to score, striking out five and allowing three hits.
Herbster pitched the first four innings, allowing one run on four hits. Herbster was also 2-for-5 from the plate with two runs and a double.
Mozingo hit 2-for-5 with a stolen base, and Hlutke plated twice.
The second game saw Grace win in the seventh inning. Goshen jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.
The Maple Leafs extended that cushion to 6-2 after four innings, setting the stage for a dramatic comeback.
The Lady Lancers started their rally in the sixth inning. Mozingo led off the inning with a single and eventually scored to get Grace started. Later in the inning, Olivia Scarbrough hit an RBI double and scored herself, and Elaina McClellan also plated to tie the game at 6-6.
Grace tacked on three more runs in the seventh to grab the lead for good. Scarbrough executed a squeeze bunt to bring in Clarissa Knight, and Herbster and Mozingo also scored to give Grace a 9-6 cushion.
Goshen had two hits in the bottom of the seventh, but Herbster shut the door by forcing the Maple Leafs into two straight ground outs to end the game. Herbster did not allow a run to score over the final two innings from the circle.
Mozingo and Knight were both 3-for-4 with three runs scored, Scarbrough and McClellan each had two RBIs, and Ashley Kleinbub was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
The Lady Lancers will play at I.U. South Bend on Thursday before traveling to Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.
