Wawasee Softball Rebounds, Beats Lady Trojans In Five Innings

SYRACUSE – Rebounding from its first loss of the season, Wawasee’s softball team scored four runs in the first, then pulled away over the last five frames in an 11-1, five-inning win over visiting Triton Saturday.
Starting pitcher Hannah Haines helped her team two ways. First with  her bat, stroking a three-run homer in the first inning and two more singles in the game. Then with her arm, allowing just four hits to the Lady Trojans, striking out five and walking none in getting the win.
Wawasee also had doubles from Madie Wilson and Meghan Fretz among its 14 hits in the game. Triton’s lone extra-base hit came from Taytum Hargrave.
The Lady Warriors improved to 6-1 and open Northern Lakes Conference play at Warsaw today. Triton (4-3) plays at Manchester on Thursday.

Wawasee Golf 2nd At Northrop
FORT WAYNE – Wawasee lost a tiebreaker to Fort Wayne Blackhawk and finished second in the  Northrop Invitational boys golf tournament Saturday at Colonial Oaks Golf Club in Fort Wayne.
The Warriors’ Zach Leedy shot a 38 on the back nine and was the medalist with an 81. Dillon Drake shot a 93, Cameron Brill a 99 and Jared Krugman 106 for Wawasee. Alan Galloway had a 132 in the tourney.
Kobe Jones led the Wawasee junior varsity with a 95, followed by Luke Weisser’s 100. Evan Dippon shot a 108, Jake Cowan a 119 and Carter Hite a 145.
“We got off to a rough start but came back,” Wawasee coach Steve Coverstone said. “We have to fight through the inexperience and learn as we go.”
Wawasee will play at Central Noble on Tuesday.

Wawasee Drops 3 At Jimtown
ELKHART – Playing at Saturday’s Jimtown Invitational, Wawasee’s girls tennis team dropped all three of its matches.
Wawasee will host Central Noble today in a non-conference match.

Whitko Splits DH, Gets First Loss
SOUTH WHITLEY – Whitko’s baseball team came from behind for a 5-4 win over Heritage in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, but suffered its first loss of the season with a 6-5 loss in the second contest.
Alex Robbins was the winning pitcher in the first game, pitching five innings with two walks and three strikeouts. Zack Morris got the save, leaving the tying run stranded on third.
Zack Hewitt had a homer and a double among his three hits, scoring twice and driving in a pair of runs. Austin Hollowell and Drew Bradford had two hits each.
Heritage took a 6-2 lead with a four-run fifth inning in the second game. Whitko fought back with a run in the fifth when Landon Goff scored on a wild pitch, and a two-run homer from Goff in the sixth. River West took the loss on the mound despite striking out seven in five innings of work.
The Wildcats host West Noble in a non-conference game today.

Lady ‘Cats Tennis Splits
FORT WAYNE – Whitko’s girls tennis team split two matches Saturday in the Fort Wayne South Side Invitational. The Lady Wildcats beat the host Lady Archers 4-1 then lost to Central Noble 5-0.
Winners for Whitko in the match with South Side were Morgan and Delaney Keirn, Jackie Werstler in singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Natalie Iholtz and Mahkinsey Myers.
The Lady ‘Cats are back in action Tuesday, hosting Triton.

Warsaw Splits With Riley
Bryce Sensibaugh had a double, a single and drove in three runs in Warsaw’s 8-7 win over South Bend Riley in the opening game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader Saturday. Riley won 16-4 in the second game.
The Tigers’ Jared Hawley had two hits and drove in a pair of runs in the first game, with Jordan Steffensmeier getting a double among his two hits and driving in a pair of runs.
Matt Shapiro was the winning pitcher for Warsaw, and Jordan Jones recorded the save.
In the second game, Colin Marshall and Hawley had two hits each for Warsaw.
Now 2-3 on the season, Warsaw travels to Syracuse to take on Wawasee today in the Northern Lakes Conference opener for both teams.

Hensley Tosses 6-Inning No-Hitter In Triton Sweep

BOURBON – Triton junior Dylan Hensley tossed a six-inning no-hitter in the opening game of a Hoosier North Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader sweep Saturday over West Central. Triton won 10-0 in the first game and 12-2 in the second.
Hensley struck out 11 West Central hitters  in the opener. Nate Flenar had a double and drove in a pair of runs.
In the second game Triton scored in all the odd-numbered innings; three in the first and third frames, four in the fifth and two in the seventh. Zac Pitney had a double and a homer, scored three times and pitched a complete game on the mound, striking out eight. Hensley added a pair of hits and nine different players accounted for Triton’s 12 runs.
Triton will host Caston in HNAC play Thursday.

Betten Tosses No-No In Lady Viking Softball Sweep
WALKERTON – Tippecanoe Valley freshman Ally Betten tossed a no-hitter over five innings, capping a Lady Viking softball sweep over John Glenn with a 13-0 win in non-conference play Saturday.
Valley run-ruled the Lady Falcons in the opener, 16-2 in five innings.
Betten struck out seven and walked one in her performance. She also had three hits, scored a run and drove in three in the game. Syndey Howard had two hits and drove in three runs.
In the first game Betten also had three hits and drove in three runs. Her sister Abby, Kirstyn Yoder and Howard had two hits each, and Yoder scored three times. Kayla Scott was the winning pitcher, scattering eight hits and allowing one earned run in five innings in the circle.
The Lady Vikings will host culver Academy Tuesday.

Vikings Drop See-Saw Game
BREMEN – After falling behind 5-2 in the third inning at Bremen Saturday, Tippecanoe Valley came back to take a lead in a non-conference baseball game Saturday. Bremen scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to walkoff with a 10-9 win over Valley.
The Vikings scored five times to take a 7-5 lead in the fifth inning The Lions tied the game in their half of the fifth, and Valley scored twice to take the lead in the seventh, setting up the Lions’ successful final comeback bid.
Adam Myers pitched the first five innings, allowing 10 hits and four earned runs. Tanner Trippiedi suffered the loss. Alec Craig, Lucas Walters, Myers and Trippiedi had multiple-hit games for the Vikings.
Tippecanoe Valley travels to Royal Center to take on Pioneer today.

Lady Squires Sweep Doubleheader
FREMONT – Manchester improved its record to 5-0 after sweeping Fremont in a Saturday softball doubleheader. The Lady Squires won the non-conference games 9-3 an 14-4
In the opener Manchester scored the first nine runs of the game to back up the pitching of Mattie McKee.
Cierra Carter, Emma West and Kiera Stacy had two hits each in the second contest. Brooklyn Howard struck out seven hitters in her complete-game effort.
The Lady Squires host Adams Central today.

Squire Track 7th At ‘Busco
CHURUBUSCO – Manchester’s boys track team finished seventh at the Churubusco Relays Saturday.
Lance Bennett had the best track finish for the Squires, taking second in the 800-meter run, with Ben Reichenbach finishing eighth in the race.
Isaiah Davis had the best Manchester finish in the field events, taking second place in the high jump. Parker Yard tied for eighth in the event.
Heath Dierks was fifth in the discus with a throw of 125 feet even, and finished 11th in the shot put. Drew Jones and Ethan Davis were sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 1,600.
The 4x100 relay team of Brandon Wagoner, Jacob Burton, Trey Clark and Nick Wagner was sixth. The 4x400 relay team of Burton, Remington Trick, Wagner and Bennett finished fourth. In the 4x800 relay, Manchester’s quartet of Jones, Reichenbach, Wilson Nettleton and Bennett also finished fourth.
Trick was 10th in the 400, and Montgomery Pattison 11th in the 300 hurdles. Wagner was 12th in the 100, with Burton 11th and Clark 12th in the 200. Isaiah Davis was eighth in the long jump.
“Out scores don't reflect the great effort by our athletes.” Manchester coach Julie Cassel said. “The great competition resulted in many personal records.”
Manchester is back at it today with a trip to Denver for a meet with Lakeland Christian, Caston and host North Miami.
