The visitors showed they can hit as they racked up 13 safeties, four for extra bases, as the Lady Trojans beat Goshen 9-5 Thursday in a non-conference clash at Shanklin Park.
“We had some clutch hits and some big fielding plays,” Triton coach Steve McBride after his team topped an opponent led by a coach he use to face when both were in the old Northern State Conference. “I have a lot of respect for (former Jimtown and current Goshen) coach (Brent) Kulp. His teams never beat themselves. They play the right way. That’s why I like playing them. It’s a test of your team to compete with them.”
Triton (4-2) scored a pair of two-out runs in the top of the first inning Thursday.
Nikki Sechrist pulled a 1-2 pitch over the left field fence for a two-run homer.
“You have to protect because she was ahead in the count,” Sechrist said after her first roundtrip of the 2017 season. She belted seven last season.
The right-handed slugger plated courtesy runner Emma Young, on for Hannah Woodard who walked, in front of her.
Lady Trojans catcher Maci Irvine threw out a would-be base stealer at second base for the first out in the second inning.
Triton scored two more two-out runs in the third frame.
Taytum Hargrave led off the inning by slicing an opposite-field double to left field, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Crystal Brown and scored on Sechrist’s single to right field.
Sechrist scored from first base when Goshen (4-3) misplayed Kaci Pugh’s single to center field.
Goshen put its first two batters on base in the bottom of the third inning, but the threat was ended when Trojans center fielder Hargrave made a catch and threw to second to double off the lead runner.
The Lady RedHawks turned an inning-ending double play of their own when pitcher Kate Atkinson snagged a line drive off the bat of Whytnie Miller and threw to first to double off the runner.
Goshen stranded a runner at third base in its half of the fourth inning.
Atkinson drew a lead-off walk and moved to third base on a bunt-and-run with Jordan Nemeth laying down the sacrifice. But Woodard retired the next two hitters to squelch the scoring chance.
Triton pushed across two more runs in the fifth inning.
Hargrave kicked up chalk while ripping a triple down the right field line. Brown followed with a bunt single and stole second base.
Woodard’s double to the fence in left drove in Hargrave and Brown.
At that point, Caitlyn Doyle replaced Atkinson as the RedHawks pitcher. Doyle stopped the uprising by recording three straight outs.
Goshen sent nine hitters to the plate and tallied three runs in the fifth inning.
The RedHawks loaded the bases with no outs and Courtney Jennings replaced Woodard in the pitching circle.
A walk to Alexia Nettrouer forced home Shelby Yoder (who was hit by a Woodard pitch).
Two runners scored on Atkinson’s fielder’s choice to second base (Sara Breniser who was hit by a pitch and Elkah DeVoe who singled, both off Woodard).
Triton went up 8-3 with a two-run sixth inning. Brown’s two-run double down the left field line knocked in Jennings (single to left) and Miller (walk).
A two-out RBI single to left by Miller in the seventh inning drove in Jennings (single to left) produced the Trojans’ ninth run.
“Give credit to Triton,” Kulp said. “They came in and hit the ball pretty hard. I’ve known Nikki Sechrist since she was 13 years old (and played travel ball for his father Dennis). Their center fielder (Hargrave) does a pretty good job.”
Next up for Triton (4-2) is a game at Wawasee at 11 a.m. Saturday.
