When the two teams met Monday at LaVille, Triton scored six times in the top of the sixth to blow open a close game.
On Tuesday, LaVille trailed 3-1 with two out in the top of the sixth and Adam Steinke, who led off the frame with a double, still on second base.
Freshman Jimmy Fisher then blooped a 3-1 pitch from Triton starter Zac Pitney, and the ball fell between the shortstop, left and centerfielders for an RBI single.
After that, the flood gates opened, with the next eight hitters stroking base hits, including Steinke’s second double of the inning, After all was said and done, 13 hitters came to the plate, and the inning ended with LaVille scoring eight times.
Five times the Lancers were down to their last strike in the inning, but kept the line moving. Anthony Felke was caught stealing to finally bring the frame to a close.
Triton coach Tyler Hensley said the one play was the turning point in the contest.
“It all fell apart when we didn’t make that play in left field,” he said. “We make that catch and we’re still up 3-1 and it’s the end of the inning. Those little things win you games, and those little things lose you games.”
Before the flood gates opened, Pitney had pitched fairly well. He allowed three hits before the bloop single, walked just one hitter and struck out three.
“I should have pulled him a little earlier. He was getting tired.” said Hensley. “But we don’t have many pitchers. But that one play was the turning point. If we have made it, I think (Pitney) would have been all right. That’s how baseball goes.”
Pitney got a ball up in the wind that went for a two-run homer that gave the Trojans a 3-0 lead. But after that LaVille senior Justin DeClark retired 12 of the last 13 hitters he faced. Max Slusser doubled with one out in the fifth, but was caught stealing for the second out of the frame.
Triton (2-1) has today off, and will travel to Plymouth for a 4:30 p.m. game on Thursday.
