SOUTH WHITLEY – Whitko needed 10 innings to claim an 8-7 victory in the opening game of a doubleheader with visiting Bluffton, then won the second game 10-0 in five innings for the sweep Saturday.
In the opener the Wildcats trailed 6-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh and final inning of regulation play. Drew Bradford cranked a three-run homer to tie the game. He also had a pair of doubles and was the winning pitcher in the contest.
Bluffton scratched across a run in the top of the 10th to retake the lead, but Whitko won the game on Bradford’s infield single. River West scored the tying run, and Bailey Platt scored when the Bluffton third baseman made a bad throw to first.
It was all Wildcats in the second game. Whitko plated six runs in its half of the first, two on a double by Ryan Hollowell to open the scoring. River West had an RBI single, and later scored on a wild pitch.
Hollowell drove in a run in the second on a sacrifice fly. Alex Bechtold had a RBI double in the fourth, and Hewitt drove in a pair with a double later in the inning.
Alex Robbins allowed just two hits in five shutout innings of work.
Whitko will take a 5-0 record into Tuesday’s game at Wawasee in Syracuse.

Lady ‘Cats Split At Bluffton Invitational
BLUFFTON – Whitko softball split its two games in the Bluffton Invitational, falling 6-5 to Central Noble before hanging on to beat the host Lady Tigers 12-11 in the second game.
Whitko led the first game 4-0 before Central Noble answered with a five-run fifth, and picking up an important insurance run in the sixth. The Lady Wildcats came back with one in the seventh, but couldn’t tie the game.
Emalee Duggins doubled and singled against the Lady Eagles. Hope Eberly had a double, and Anna Ousley singled twice in the first game.
Whitko scored three runs in each of the first three innings of the Bluffton game, then added a single tally in the fourth and two more in the fifth. The Lady Tigers rallied with five runs in the fifth to cut the Whitko lead to 12-7, then got four more in the bottom of the sixth.
Shi Bradley earned her first-career varsity win, and also homered in the game.
Whitko will travel to Fort Wayne South Side for a game at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
