April 6, 2017 at 7:07 p.m.
By Staff Report-
Celebrate Diversity 2017 will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 22 at the Warsaw Central Park Fountain. There is no charge for admission.
“Given the current climate in our nation, we feel that this year’s event is even more important than years past,” said Linda Francis, member of the planning committee, in a press release from the group.
“We are at a pivotal point in our county’s history where the rights of several groups of individuals could be affected by legislation that takes some significant steps in the wrong direction. I think that regardless of your political viewpoints, everyone can agree that treating others fairly and with respect is important. That’s what this event is all about,” she said.
Topics and speakers will include:
• Living as a Native American in 2017, Chief Buchanan of the Miami Nation of Indiana.
• Avoiding Stigmas Associated with Mental Disorders and Substance Use Disorders, Tammy Cotton, The Rose Home.
• A Day in the Life of a Latina; Helping Veterans, Folks with PTSD and Special Needs Children, Tammy Stackhouse, Magical Meadows.
• Real Threats to Women’s Rights, April Slone, The Beaman Home.
• LGBT – Current Issues, Andy Semler and Warsaw Community Schools GSA.
• Current Legislation that Affects Diversity and Inclusion, Brian Smith.
Marena Moonflower will provide music. Music and speakers will take the stage from 11 a.m. to 12:40 p.m., with a peace march around downtown Warsaw to follow from 12:40-1 p.m.
The celebration also will feature homemade cookies and bottled water for attendees.
Children are welcome to the event, but pets are not allowed in the park.
Attendees are asked to RSVP via Facebook; search for “Celebrate Diversity 2017” within Facebook, or visit to register.
