Taylor, Warsaw Slay Lady Dragons
By Dale [email protected]
It certainly did Tuesday night for the Warsaw Lady Tigers.
Hosting Argos in a high school girls soccer match, Warsaw got off to an electrifying start as freshman Delaney Taylor scored two goals in the first two minutes of action.
Taylor completed the hat trick with a goal in the 59th minute, and the Lady Tigers went on to win 6-1.
What Warsaw coach Peter Lucht called a dream start for his team was a nightmare for the Lady Dragons.
Class 2A No. 17 Warsaw improved to 13-3 with its 11th straight win, while 1A No. 8 Argos fell to 10-3-1 on the season.
“It was a dream start,” said Lucht. “We’re blessed and grateful. We had a really good practice (Monday) and you saw some of the fruits of that tonight. We finished our opportunities and Delaney got two right off the bat.
“It was a super strong start, but I feel like we pulled off a little bit after that, so I wasn’t happy about that. But the girls kind of regrouped, regathered, and finished strong.”
Taylor’s first goal came on an assist from freshman Brenna Buhrt, while sophomore Dayle Harvey assisted on the second.
Sophomore Anna Grill scored with an assist from Buhrt in the 32nd minute to push the advantage to 3-0 at halftime.
Junior Sydney Wiedman scored in the 52nd minute with the help of classmate Brenna Shipley, followed seven minutes later by another Taylor goal on an assist from senior Mariah Rivera, and then another Wiedman goal assisted by freshman Abby Steffensmeier in the 78th minute.
Wiedman just missed a hat trick, as her goal at the end of regulation was ruled to have been after time expired.
The Lady Dragons scored their lone goal in the 63rd minute when senior Courtney Dunlap found the back of the net.
“They have had a good season, they’re a strong team,” Lucht said of Argos. “They’re ranked in 1A. Traditionally, they’re a strong program. But it had to be a little shattering giving up two quick goals. It’s hard to regroup after that, but they continued to fight, so credit to them.”
From here on out, the Lady Tigers are in championship mode.
Warsaw will play at Northridge Thursday, with the Northern Lakes Conference title on the line. The Lady Tigers will then host the sectional next week.
“Our focus lately has been on Northridge, preparing for that,” said Lucht. “After that, there’s some really good teams in the tournament, too, that we’ll have to face. There’s no games off from here on out. We’ve got to brin our A game.”
