Wawasee held back the Warsaw rush for a while, but once the goals started coming for the Lady Tigers, they really didn’t stop until a 10-0 win was secure in a Northern Lakes Conference girls soccer match Saturday.
The Warsaw boys beat Wawasee 4-0, completing the sweep of the doubleheader.
The Lady Tigers had three seniors playing their final home game, and all three scored. Lady Tiger senior Julie Frazetta opened the scoring early off an assist from Brenna Buhrt three minutes in, and 16 minutes later Delaney
Taylor made it 2-0 off a pass from Brenna Shipley.
The margin stayed at two until the Lady Tigers unleashed a barrage of six goals in 16 minutes of play. Buhrt and Abby Steffensmeier both scored in the 37th minute, and Shipley scored as time expired in the first half to make it 5-0.
Senior Mariah Rivera found the net less than a minute into the second half, off a pass from Sydney Weideman. Breck Jackson was the last senior to score, doing so off another assist by Buhrt.
Anna Sullivan, Sarah Ocock and Anna Grill rounded out the scoring.
Wawasee had few chances to score, and those opportunities were snuffed out quickly by a hustling Lady Tiger defense. One Lady Warrior shot was about a foot wide right, another hit the left post, and no other shots were especially close.
Wawasee head coach Doug Heinisch knew going in it would be tough sledding for his team, especially missing regulars Meghan Beer, Olivia Birch and Haleigh Smarr. Heinisch felt like his team held out as long as they could.
“For starters, Warsaw is really good,” said Heinisch. “We played the two best teams in the conference this week (Northridge and Warsaw) and I guess the best thing to be said with that is we got them out of the way.
“They’re good, they’re always good. We played them well at 2-0 up until about the four-minute mark of the first half and then we just ran out of a gas. Similar thing happened at Plymouth on Thursday.”
Warsaw head coach Peter Lucht agreed. His was simply the more gifted squad.
“God’s blessed us, we’re a strong team. Despite the score, I do think Wawasee has improved this year,” Lucht said. “I heard that going in to this match and I saw here today.
“So, credit to them and that coaching staff and to their girls for working hard. There was a difference today in what each team brought to the table and that was reflected in the play.”
In the junior varsity contest, Sarah Ocock scored in the 75th minute to give Warsaw a 1-0 win. The Warsaw JV improved its record to 4-7.
The lady Tigers improved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in the NLC, and will host Argos in a non-conference match Tuesday. Wawasee continues NLC play Tuesday when it hosts Elkhart Memorial.
