Webster To Buy Small Dump Truck, Bullet-Proof Vests

September 22, 2016 at 4:05 p.m.

NORTH WEBSTER – North Webster will soon purchase a small dump truck that will give the town two vehicles that can spread street salt during inclement weather.
The town council approved a request to purchase a small dump truck with a salt distributor that hangs off the back of the truck for a little more than $9,000.
Mike Noe, the town’s public works manager, told council the town’s one truck used for spreading salt is older and has had mechanical issues. He underscored the importance of having a back up in the event the older truck is no available.
The town plans to purchase the vehicle from W. A. Jones Truck Equipment, Columbia City.
Council also approved plans to replace four bullet-proof vests for the police department.
Total cost will be about $3,100, but the town participates in a grant program that cuts the town’s cost almost in half, said police chief Greg Church.
In other items:
• The town held a hearing on the 2017 budget, which is expected to be $1.4 million. Clerk-Treasurer Betsy Luce said the town’s maximum levy for 2017 is  $412,000, but that the town budget will only require $407,000. A final hearing on the budget will be Oct. 18.
• Official Halloween hours were announced. Hours will be 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.
