Coach Eric Christiansen’s squad, improving to 4-1 overall and 4-0 in the league, took control from the get-go at MU’s courts. The Spartans, resuming the program’s best conference start since 2007, welcomes Franklin College for another loop dual Saturday. First serve is set for 10 a.m.
Lady Spartans Fall In HCAC Opener
NORTH MANCHESTER – Senior outside hitter Courtney Chowning and sophomore outside hitter Farren Miller each posted double-doubles in kills and digs Wednesday, but it wasn’t enough for Manchester University to overcome a tremendous front line defensive effort from visiting Rose-Hulman.
The Fightin’ Engineers (7-7 overall, 1-0 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference) put up 11 team blocks led by nine from middle hitter Emily McLendon. That effort helped power the visitors to a 25-19, 26-24, 25-21 victory at Stauffer-Wolfe Arena.
Chowning (13 kills, 13 digs and two service aces) and Miller (12 kills and 11 digs) aided the Black and Gold attack. Sophomore middle hitter Hannah Tevis tallied a pair of solo blocks and aced a pair of service attempts, while sophomore setter Dakota Stanichuk turned in 37 assists for the other statistical category leads.
MU, seeing a six-match win skein stopped, dropped to 7-5 overall and 0-1 in league play. They turn around quickly for their next competition Saturday, hosting Franklin College with a 1 p.m. first serve.
Hersick Hat Trick Highlights Road Trip
HUNTINGTON – Manchester University pushed National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ foe Huntington University tooth and nail Wednesday.
The Spartans rallied back from a 3-1 halftime deficit due to the foot of junior midfielder Courtney Hersick. She joined sophomore forward/midfielder Maranda Birmingham at the top of the Black and Gold’s goal chart with a hat trick, including two strikes that found the back of the Foresters’ net just 24 seconds apart in the second half.
That pair of scores leveled the contest at 3-3 at HU’s King Stadium. Huntington managed to counter less than a minute after the tying goal with one of their own, the eventual game-winner, in the 60th minute and hung on for a 4-3 decision.
In a match that saw plenty of offense with a combined 61 shots between the two sides, MU’s duo of Birmingham and Hersick led the charge combining for 17 of the squad’s 22. The underclasswoman goalkeeping tandem of sophomore Caroline Smith and freshman Kendal Baker managed 11 saves against a 39-shot attack for the home team.
The Spartans, slipping to 0-6, break from competition to prepare for their 2016 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opener at Hanover College Oct. 1.
