Harry “Jim” Boggs, 87, Warsaw, passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones at 8:50 p.m. Sept. 15, 2016, in Miller’s Merry Manor, Warsaw.
He was born Feb. 8, 1929, in Chicago, to Helen Claire Dale Boggs and Harry Weber, and welcomed by his older sisters Betty and Nancy. The family later made its home on a farm south of Warsaw, where Jim developed a strong work ethic.
On July 8, 1951, Jim and Joyce Taylor were married. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year. They raised three children, daughter Pamela and twin sons Kevin and Kim.
The family frequently enjoyed camping vacations in state and national parks, where Jim and Joyce instilled in their children a love of the outdoors and a sense of adventure.
He attended Claypool High School and was a member of the basketball team. He went on to attend Manchester College for three years, leaving to serve in the U.S. Army in Japan and Korea as a member of the military police. He was honorably discharged a corporal.
He spent much of his working life as the plant manager of Flexaust, Warsaw, retiring in the late 1980s. He was not content unless he was busy, so after retiring he worked in various positions in the construction business. He took great pleasure in woodworking, creating unique mailboxes, holiday decorations and other beautiful items for friends and family.
He was a Shriner and a member of the Winona Lake Lions Club.
His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He rarely missed a sporting event or dance recital and was very much a hands-on grandfather.
He loved people and was always ready with a story or joke for whoever was nearby. He never knew a stranger, and enjoyed shooting the breeze at local lunch counters, especially Zale’s.
He is beloved for all these reasons and more, and will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce, Warsaw; a sister, Betty Nyenhuis, Winona Lake; children: Kevin Boggs (and spouse Faith), Warsaw; Kim Boggs (and partner Anna Stiles), Mentone; and Pamela Kolter (and spouse Bill), Claypool; grandchildren: Jessica Davies (and spouse Michael), Chicago; Loren Boggs (and partner Zachary Harper), New York City; Phillip Boggs (and partner Holly Perkins), Chicago; Brandon Hepler (and spouse Kelli), Warsaw; Nate Hepler (and spouse Karie), Warsaw; Autumn Jacobs (and partner Johnathon Dunmyre), Tacoma, Wash.; Brooke Huffman (and spouse Nick), Silver Lake; and Caylee Kline (and spouse Shane), Galveston; great-grandchildren: Kendall Hepler, Kale Hepler, Eli Hepler, Isabella Davies, Finn Davies and Sebastian Boggs; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his parents; sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Tim Shoemaker; and brother-in-law Henry “Hank” Nyenhuis.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in First United Methodist Church Connection Campus, 1692 W. Lake St., Warsaw, with Pastor Cindy Gackenheimer officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw, with full military honors by American Legion Post 49, VFW Post 1126 and the Army Funeral Honor Guard.
Calling is from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Connection Campus, Warsaw.
