Warsaw Tennis Team Dominates Rival Wawasee

On senior night, the seniors on Warsaw’s boys tennis team played like a bunch of, well, seniors.
With six seniors in their seven-player varsity lineup Tuesday evening, the Warsaw Tigers beat Northern Lakes Conference and Kosciusko County rival Wawasee 5-0.
Coach Rick Orban said his veteran team expected to win, and the Tigers played like it, as the Warriors won a total of just seven games in the five matches.
“We expected to win this,” said Orban. “Our focus was to stay focused, not to change our level of play, but to keep our level of play where it should be.
“We looked at this match, we talked about this match ... we know their record, we know most of their kids. It was a matter of everyone playing the way they should play.”
At No. 1 singles, Warsaw’s Colton Lind beat Dylan Staley 6-0, 6-0. The Tigers won by the same score at No. 2 doubles, where Hayden Steger and Ethan Hoff topped Graham Perek and Mason Grey.
In No. 2 singles action, Warsaw’s Andrew Gauger was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over Nate Haines.
At No. 1 doubles, the Tigers’ duo of Ryan Wettschurack and Justin Stout handled Tim Conley and Evan Krueger 6-2, 6-0.
In the longest match of the evening, which lasted about an hour and 15 minutes, Warsaw’s David Homme beat Nathan Perek 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3 singles.
“This year has been a little tough for us, once we got into the NLC (schedule),” said Wawasee coach Vince Rhodes. “We did fairly well early in the season, it’s just a mental thing right now.
“Nathan has been playing a lot more matches for a lot longer period of time, just like tonight. He had a couple games there at 0-40 and came back and got (the points). I told him it’s about being patient and knowing when to go. That’s the biggest thing, a lot of times they get impatient and don’t want to wait. That’s part of it right there.”
With the win, Warsaw improved to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in NLC play, while the Warriors fell to 6-7 and 0-5.
The Tigers wrap up conference round-robin action by playing at NorthWood Thursday and at undefeated Concord Monday.
Wawasee hosts Elkhart Memorial Thursday.
