An unknown man alerted a former police officer and his family of a fire in their garage, potentially averting further disaster.
Firefighters responded to a garage fire at 411 E. Pope St., Warsaw, Tuesday, according to a press release from Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory.
A call came into Kosciusko County Central Dispatch at approximately 7:41 p.m after the unknown male knocked on the front door of the residence and alerted the occupants of the fire.
The owner of the garage, former officer Douglas Brumfield, his wife and his two canines, were able to escape with no injuries, the release states.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is believed to be accidental, according to the release.
The Winona Lake Fire Department assisted with fighting the blaze.
The firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in the garage and keep the majority of the damage to the garage area, however, the home did suffer minor smoke damage and exterior wall damage.
Lutheran EMS Kosciusko was on scene to help the firefighters with safety and the occupants of the residence. American Red Cross came to the scene to assist the homeowners. 1-800-BoardUp was requested to the residence to board and secure the damaged area.
Firefighters were on the scene until about 10 p.m.
