Valley Netters Fall To Rival Rochester

Three of the matches were competitive; Valley’s Keith Wright led in the first set at No. 1 singles before dropping it, then came back to win the second set. Rochester’s Justin Phoun was able to step up and take the third set.
“We just didn’t hit enough balls in play. We made more mistakes than they did, and that was really the deal,” Shambaugh said. “I feel like we’re just shaking off four days of rust. We just can’t practice with all this rain. We’ve missed some matches, and it feels like after the weekend, it takes a while to get into things.
“(Phoun) really picked up his play in the third set; that was a factor for us.”
At No. 2 doubles, the Vikings’ Chris Schipper and Dylan Sponseller dropped a first-set tiebreaker, and that seemed to take the wind out of their sails.
“There’s always some of that, especially at this level,” Shambaugh said. “And these guys aren’t match-tested; they haven’t played much tennis. To lose a close one like that is always a factor.
“There’s always a sigh, then you come out in the second set and you’re down 3-0 before you even know it. To their credit, they fought back; they played OK. Rochester is a very good team this year, so for us to be competitive, that’s a step in the right direction.”
Valley resumes TRC play Wednesday at Maconaquah.
