Huntington North Golfers Top Warsaw, Manchester

September 9, 2016 at 4:33 p.m.

Warsaw senior Madi Graham won the battle Thursday.
The Huntington North Lady Vikings, however, won the war, so to speak.
In a three-team high school girls golf match at Stonehenge, Graham carded a 41 to take medalist honors.
Huntington North, led by Amara Eckert’s 44 and Ashley Hall’s 45, shot a four-person team score of 191 and beat the Lady Tigers by one stroke.
The Manchester Lady Squires, led by Lydia Little’s 47, shot a team score of 200.
“Shoot, we’ve had three or four matches where we’ve been within, at most, five strokes,” said Warsaw coach Tad Nieter, whose team fell to 8-6 on the season. “The silver lining is we’re making progress. We’re back on track to where we were at the beginning of the season. That’s the spot we need to be going into the NLC tournament.”
Warsaw, 2-5 in round-robin conference action, will play in the NLC Tournament Saturday at McCormick Creek in Nappanee. Teams begin teeing off at 8:15 a.m.
To go with Graham’s 41, the Lady Tigers’ team score included Page Desenberg’s 47, Madelyn Ray’s 48 and Delaney Wihebrink’s 56.
Izzy Ray rounded out Warsaw’s lineup with a 57.
“Madi Graham is coming into her own,”?said Nieter. “She struggled for a couple weeks during NLC?play, but she’s starting to find her swing, and she’s starting to be a lot more rhythmic.
“Page is the exact opposite, where her short game is coming alive now. I like where both of them are heading into the postseason.”
To go with the scores from Hall and Eckert, Huntington North got a 49 from Laura Ham and a 53 from McKenzie Hanline.
Crosley Stanley rounded out the Lady Vikings’ lineup with a 54.
After Little’s 47, Kelsey Eichenauer carded a 48 for Manchester, while Karly Eichenauer shot 51 and Samantha Kissell and Madyson Ulrey both shot 54.
The Lady Squires were 11-0 going into Wednesday’s match at Norwood, where they will play Saturday in the Three Rivers Conference Tournament and then the sectional a week later.
Manchester fell 167-186 to Huntington North Wednesday, followed by the pair of losses Thursday at Stonehenge.
“We’ve just struggled. It’s been a rough couple days,” said Manchester coach Josh Troyer. “We just haven’t played well. We’ve had a lot of higher scores than normal. We’re just battling through some stuff, and we haven’t had a lot of practice lately with all the rain, and our matches.
“We’ve just gotta be able to handle the bad hole, the bad shot. I think sometimes we overreact to a bad shot, and it’s hurt us. We’ve also got to stay focused. We’re hitting shots with our mind in three other places, instead of just executing the shot. We’ve got to focus a lot more on the process of each shot, rather than what score we’re shooting, or who we’re competing against.”
In JV action Thursday, Huntington North shot 207, followed by Warsaw’s 232 and Manchester’s 234.
