Warsaw Kickers Fall To Elkhart Memorial

September 7, 2016 at 4:30 p.m.

The Warsaw Tigers dodged a bullet just 24 seconds into Tuesday’s Northern Lakes Conference boys soccer match, as senior goalkeeper Tomas Rivera made a save on an Elkhart Memorial penalty kick.
In the third minute of the 80-minute match, the Crimson Chargers had a goal waved off because they were offsides.
The host Tigers weren’t as fortunate the rest of the way, however, as Memorial led 4-1 at halftime and eventually won 5-1.
Senior midfielder Jamie Mayorga scored three goals for the Crimson Chargers, while seniors Oscar Ocampo and Wisdom Chigwada each netted a goal.
Memorial played in the regional championship game a year ago, and the Crimson Chargers are certainly good again this season.
Warsaw coach Frank Courtois, though, felt like his team made Memorial look even better.
“We made them look good by making silly mistakes, the turnovers, and our spirit just wasn’t there,” said Courtois. “We were here physically, but mentally we were not in the game.”
With the loss, the Tigers fell to 2-4-3 overall and 0-3 in the NLC, while Memorial improved to 3-1-1 and 1-1 in the conference standings.
“Our defense was flat ... the whole team was flat,” said Courtois. “I can tell you when the boys got here, when I looked at them, I knew they weren’t here mentally, just physically. I tried to tell them we had to shut Memorial down the first 20 minutes, because if we would shut them down the first 20 minutes we would give them a game.”
Mayorga put Memorial up 1-0 with a goal in the 11th minute, and then he made it 2-0 three minutes later.
The Tigers cut the deficit to 2-1 when junior Eric Ocock scored in the 20th minute.
Memorial responded seconds later, however, with an Ocampo goal that seemed to break the Tigers’ back.
Mayorga added a goal in the 35th minute, followed by Chigwada’s goal in the 74th minute.
“My boys were in the game in the second half, they were making passes and they were in the game,” said Courtois. “But the first 20 minutes in the first half killed us. Once you give them three goals, you’re going to have to work really hard to get them back, and that’s what happened to us.”
Warsaw isn’t the only team that Memorial has been able to score multiple goals against.
In their last three games, the Crimson Chargers have outscored Marian, Bethany Christian and the Tigers 13-1.
Warsaw is in action again Thursday when it hosts Penn in a makeup game, while Memorial travels to Northridge Thursday.
“It’s who shows up, hopefully we can regroup,” said Courtois. “We’ll practice Wednesday, play Penn Thursday, and then we’ll got to Valpo on Saturday.”
