He was born on April 6, 1948, in Warsaw, to Richard A. and Letha F. (Walters) Hamman.
He retired from the New Prairie School System, where he was employed as a teacher. He was a first grade teacher for 18 years. He taught at Olive Township and Prairie View Schools.
After retiring from teaching, he worked as a car salesman at Campbell Ford and Tyler Automotive in Niles, Mich.
On Aug. 21, 1971, in the former Portage United Methodist Church in South Bend, he married Lois A. Wood, who survives.
He is also survived by his son, Jacob (Ferris) Hamman of South Bend; two grandchildren, Christine and Michaela; and his sister, Linda Secrist, of San Lorenzo, Calif. Richard was preceded in death by his sister, Judith Newsom.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in Corpus Christi Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where members of the United States Air Force and the American Legion Post 284 will conduct military services. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a rosary will be prayed at 4 p.m.
Richard was a member of Corpus Christi Parish. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 49 in Warsaw and the VFW. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Indiana University.
Richard loved his family, especially his granddaughters.
