Lady Tigers Outlast NLC Foe Northridge

The Lady Tigers won a tightly-contested match 25-19, 18-25, 26-24, 28-26 over the Lady Raiders.
Northridge tried to run everything through senior outside hitter Marci Miller, who finished the night with 16 kills and traded kills with Warsaw’s Nikki Parrett and Alexie Day to close out the match.
Warsaw head coach Rick Ashmore said a major component of the Lady Tiger strategy was to keep the ball away from Miller.
“We talked about it tonight about trying to stop her, and kept shifting girls over on her,” Ashmore said. “Great players; you have to try to slow them down; maybe see if someone else would hurt us.”
Day finished with a game-high 23 kills, and Parrett was credited with 15 kills.
Ashmore credited the middle players, especially Kacy Bragg, for keeping the Lady Raiders off-balance and the outside hitters busy.
“The way Kacy moved the ball around, she was able to keep their middle active, and once the middle became active, she did a nice job of opening it up, kind of like basketball when you’re setting it up for somebody,” Ashmore said.
“Our middles stayed active, and set up our outsides to let them get some good swings at the ball.”
The first set was tied at 11 before the Lady Tigers pulled away with an 8-2 run. The second set had eight ties, the last at 15-all, before the Lady Raiders closed out with a 10-3 run of their own.
The third game was tighter still, featuring 10 ties, the last at 24-all before Warsaw closed it out.
In the fourth set, Warsaw took control early, leading 16-8 at one point before Miller led Northridge back. The last set was tied four times, the first at 23-all, but Northridge had just one serve for the set, and netted that, before Warsaw put the match away.
“It was a let down, and that’s still one of the things we have to overcome,” Ashmore said. “We have to remember the game’s to 25, not to 21.”
Warsaw improved to 8-6 overall, and into the catbird’s seat at 3-0 in the conference. Ashmore said the tough, all on the road non-conference schedule has prepared his team well for what’s ahead the rest of the way in the NLC and into sectional play.
“We’re playing pretty well right now,” Ashmore said. “We’re ready to battle. Going on the road and the bus rides, we’re kind of battle-tested. We played a number of teams that were ranked in the state, and some of the best teams around Indianapolis. We’ve seen just about everything.”
The Lady Tiger junior varsity won 25-18, 25-10 and remained undefeated after nine matches. The freshman team moved to 11-0 after its 25-14, 25-18 win over the Lady Raiders.
The Lady Tiger teams are right back at it today, hitting the road to play East Noble in Kendallville, with first serve of the JV contest set for 6 p.m.
