SOUTH WHITLEY – George R. Eberly, 92, South Whitley, died at 11:40 a.m. Sept. 2, 2016, at Warsaw Meadows, where he had been a resident since March 2015.
He was born Aug. 2, 1924, in Kosciusko County, to Levi and Mary Mishler Eberly. On June 23, 1945, he was united in marriage to Thelma L. Luckenbill, who survives. They were married 71 years.
His formative years were spent in Richland Township in Whitley County. In 1929 his family moved to Cleveland Township. He completed his education at Larwill High School.
He and Thelma made their home in Cleveland Township for two years, moving to a farm in Richland Township where they resided for 35 years. In October 1989, they moved to South Whitley.
In addition to farming, he was a bus driver for 23 years for Larwill and Whitko schools.
He was a member of Spring Creek Church of the Brethren, a Richland Township precinct committeeman, past president of Larwill Lions Club, of which he was a member for over 50 years, and served on the Larwill Squawbuck Days committee and Larwill Community Board.
Also surviving are six children: Anne K. (and spouse Terry) Walker, Linda G. (and spouse Robert) Jeffries, Steven G. (and spouse Kathy) Eberly and Debra J. (and spouse Kevin) Shoemaker, all of South Whitley; Judy J. (and spouse Larry) Sechrist, Larwill; and Jill C. Eberly, Warsaw; 16 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; three brothers: Ray Eberly, North Manchester; and Lee Eberly and Dean Eberly, both of South Whitley; and a sister, Glee Rule, Columbia City. He was preceded in death by a grandson, a step-granddaughter and a sister, Phyllis Birtwhistle.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley. Burial will be in South Whitley Cemetery.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
