Warsaw Soccer Team Falls To Concord

Warsaw boys soccer coach Frank Courtois is looking for consistency from his young team.
At times this season, the Tigers – who have three freshmen and two sophomores in the starting lineup – have started a game well, but been unable to finish.
Hosting Northern Lakes Conference rival Concord Wednesday night, it was the exact opposite for the Tigers, who fell 3-1 to the Minutemen.
Warsaw played Concord even in the second half, as both teams scored a goal after the intermission, but the story was the two goals the Tigers gave up in the first 11 minutes of play, and ultimately a 3-0 deficit.
“That’s where the problem is ... we started slow,” said Courtois. “That’s what I was telling the boys after the game. We started slow, and then we picked up the pace at the end. We can’t allow that.
“Concord is a good side, I mean those guys are strong, and you can’t give them two early goals. Some of the game’s we’ve played we scored goals early, and we couldn’t finish it. It varies. Tonight, we started slow and picked up the pace as the game went on. We need the consistency to start the game and finish the game.”
Sophomore Landon Fisher gave Concord a 1-0 lead with a goal in the ninth minute.
Two minutes later, junior Christian Saleh’s goal put the Minutemen up 2-0.
In the 56th minute, Concord’s advantage grew to 3-0 with junior Matthew Granitz’s goal.
Warsaw avoided being shutout, as junior Eric Ocock put the ball past Concord’s keeper in the 61st minute.
“He’s been working hard,” Courtois said of Ocock. “He’s a kid that went back to the drawing board, and you can see he’s a different player.”
With the experience some of his players have, and the experience his younger players are gaining, Courtois believes the Tigers are getting close to putting it all together.
Warsaw, now 0-2-2 on the season overall and 0-2 in the NLC, will have another chance for its first win of the season tonight in the Carroll Tournament.
The Tigers play Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian at 5 p.m.
