But the two goals the Warriors scored in the last 12 minutes was, in the words of head coach Jordan Sharp, too little, too late.
The visiting Eagles left town with a 4-2 win Wednesday night.
Sharp said it’s not a matter of the Warriors lacking heart; it’s more of a frustration over not seeing the results on the scoreboard.
“One of the things we talked about was their heart, and I wanted them to see something,” Sharp said. “We’ve had this similar game plan that last couple of weeks, and we’re looking to execute that plan a little better; play more together and have more heart.
“So they did show that toward the end, and I told them we need that more toward the beginning, and start the game off on the right foot.
“But it was nice to see us come back to where we did score a couple of goals. We’ve shown that heart, but didn’t have the results on the scoresheet, so it was nice to have it show up a little bit on the scoreboard.”
The Eagles got on the board early when junior Patrick Kline scored in the third minute off a pass from Ethan Baragan. But the real difference in the game came in a five-minute stretch between the 33rd and 38th minute.
Kline scored again when Wawasee goalkeeper Austin Dunithan had a free kick bounce off his hands and straight to Kline, who hit the wide-open net. In the 38th, Kline kicked the ball off Ryan Edington’s leg as Edington was trying to clear. The bounce off the Warrior leg went into the net and gave a 3-0 lead to the Eagles.
“The thing about it is two of their goals weren’t really earned. The first was a keeper error, and he was frustrated about that. The own goal was an unlucky bounce when we tried to clear it out,” Sharp said.
Kline completed his hat trick in the 53rd minute off another assist from Baragan.
Culver?Academies controlled the tempo of the game by being more physical than the Warriors up until the last 15 minutes of the match. Wawasee junior Blayne Faught scored in the 68th minute off a pass from Carter Jones, and freshman Chris Pena outran the Eagles defense to score in the 73rd minute, but by then the outcome was in little doubt.
“We mentioned to them that they might be a little bit bigger and stronger than us, but we need to have that second and third defender working with the first guy pressuring,” Sharp said. “I do think they have some individual skill, and they turned us around a couple of times. But, that happens, so it’s something we’ll be working on in practice.”
Wawasee fell to 1-4-1 on the season, and travels to Huntington North for a match at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
