He was born Dec. 9, 1928, in Clunette, to Graydon E. and Mildred Miller Powell. He married Virginia May Smith on April 18, 1948, in Atwood, and they were married 66 years. She died July 8, 2014.
He was a 1946 graduate of Atwood High School and a longtime Clunette resident.
He and his wife owned and operated the Clunette General Store for many years. Later, he operated Powell Building Service and constructed and remodeled many homes around the area. He retired in 2010. He was also an accomplished inventor, artist, sign painter, craftsman, mechanic, pilot, square dance caller, race car owner and musician. No matter what he was doing, he was always focused on developing a system to make the task simpler.
He was a member of Clunette United Methodist Church. He was an artist who painted beautiful landscapes for over 60 years.
Survivors include two sons, Michael (and spouse Joan) Powell, Cincinnati, Ohio, and Doug (and spouse Deborah) Powell, Warsaw; two grandsons, Andrew (and spouse Kate) Powell, Cincinnati, and Kevin (and spouse Melanie) Powell, Jasper; a granddaughter, Kate (and spouse Justin) Hickey, Columbus, Ohio; eight great-grandchildren: Jack, Ben and Ellie Powell, all of Cincinnati; Seth, Ryan and Gus Hickey, all of Columbus; and Carson and Callie Powell, both of Jasper; and a brother, Fred (and spouse Nancy) Powell, Clunette.
He was preceded by his wife; parents; and a sister, Ida Labelle Wray, on Jan. 9, 2014.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Titus Funeral Home, 2000 E. Sheridan St., Warsaw, with Pastor Denny Bollenbacher of New Beginnings Community Church, Atwood, officiating. Burial will be in Leesburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
