In each of the past three seasons, Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian has swept the Lady Trojans in the regional round; Tuesday night the host Lady Braves took a 25-17, 25-6, 25-12 win over Triton in 1A Regional 26.
Triton head coach Gayle Perry said “they are the better team, but we could have played so much better.
“I hate for it to end like that. They’ve come so far. But we didn’t have any confidence at all; they took us apart. I thought at first we were going to rally, I thought ‘we’re going to be OK. We’ll hit with them a little bit, learn about them.’ But as soon as they got a little taste of blood on us, they could see the fear in us, and we stopped hitting.
“We’re about hitting and power, and we didn’t have any of that tonight. We didn’t practice well (Monday) and that was the first time in a long time that they acted like they didn’t want to practice.”
Triton started off in decent shape, with the first set tied at seven. Blackhawk took the next two points, and a kill attempt by Triton bounded toward the corner of the gym. The Lady Braves dug it out of the first row of bleachers, returned it over the net and scored the point when the ball landed on the Triton side of the floor.
The Lady Trojans weren’t able to put together a significant run of points. They scored just eight points off their serve, and never more than two in a row. They didn’t score at all off their serve in the second set.
“I didn’t know that we’d win tonight, but I thought we could play with them, for a while at least,” Perry said. “But we were just taken apart. I feel bad. It’s my fault; I should have prepared them better.”
Nicole?Sechrist led Triton with five kills, and Hannah Wanemacher had 13 assists in the match. Quinn Downing had six digs, and Kaitlin Bailey added two blocks for Triton.
Blackhawk will take on Daleville (26-7) in the Caston Semistate on Saturday. The Lady Broncos swept Seaton Catholic in three close sets 25-22, 25-23, 25-19 in Richmond Tuesday.
Triton closed its season with a 22-12 record.
