Thank you, Glenda Ritz!
I had a wonderful time at the Bicentennial Celebration in Indianapolis last weekend. I watched the torch travel through town to the Capitol. I had the privilege of meeting torch bearers and hearing their stories. I arrived at the capitol building where they were allowing the public to come inside and go on self-guided or guided tours.
I am a teacher and one of the places I wanted to visit was the office of Glenda Ritz, Indiana Superintendent of Public Instruction. Her programs have helped improve 193 low performing schools and the pass/fail ISTEP test is going away under her tenure. She has been able to accomplish these things even though her elected power was usurped by then Governor Mike Pence and given to his hand-picked appointed committee for education.
Glenda Ritz had her office wide open and had provided thousands of free books for the visiting public. She had other organizations there handing out information about family friendly educational events and opportunities, like Connor Prairie and the Children’s Park of Indiana in Centerville, Indiana. Her office staff was there answering questions and showing visitors around.
While talking with them, they explained that Glenda Ritz was not there because she had not been invited by Lt. Gov. Eric Holcomb, now acting governor, to participate in the Bicentennial program. Glenda Ritz has continually tried to do what is best for Indiana’s children and the people of Indiana who voted for her and put her in this position to do the job. Governor Mike Pence has tried to do everything in his power and then some to stop her.
It looks like the claims that Eric Holcomb, now running for the governor’s office, has recently made about looking out for education and our children are just that. I saw the evidence of that just last weekend. He again is another politician that says what he thinks the public wants to hear and is not backing his words with actions.
Thank you, Glenda Ritz, for trying to rise above the political pandering by going to our schools, working with our children, and supporting our limping, but still great educational system in Indiana.
Thank you for the books, too! My students will love them!
