Lady Tigers Advance To XC State Meet

With a second-place finish from sophomore standout Zeb Hernandez, Warsaw’s boys team almost joined their female counterparts but left the New Prairie Semistate once again disappointed.
Beckham covered the famed 5K course at New Prairie High School in 18:38, just 11 seconds behind individual winner Jordyn Boyer of Lowell, and led the Lady Tigers to a third-place team finish with 130 points.
Hernandez finished the boys race in a time of 15:55, crossing the line just five seconds behind individual winner Mitchell Rans of Caston, a sophomore. The Tigers finished with an eighth-place, five-man team score of 209, missing their first state finals berth since 2013 by 21 points.
There were 20 teams in both the girls and boys races Saturday, as well as individuals that advanced from the regional without a team.
The top six teams, as well as the top 10 individuals not on an advancing team, qualified for the state finals, which will be held Saturday in Terre Haute.
On the girls side, Valparaiso won the team championship with 112 points, followed by fellow advancing squads Lowell (124), Warsaw (130), West Lafayette (133), LaPorte (157) and Lake Central (195).
Portage (205), Benton Central (213), Crown Point (217) and Munster (288) rounded out the top 10 girls teams.
Manchester finished 13th with 347 points and will be represented in Terre Haute by senior Rae Bedke, who finished 18th in 19:18 and earned the final individual qualifying spot.
“Excellent race by Mia,” said Warsaw girls coach Matt Campbell. “When she finished, she said she’s back. Excellent race. Excellent time on this course. Excellent competition. So yeah, tremendous race by Mia.”
The Lady Tigers’ other scoring runners were seniors Allison Miller (25th, 19:32) and Charlene Orr (26th, 19:33), sophomore Angie Sanchez-Vigil (37th, 19:55) and senior Anna Craig (55th, 20:09).
Freshman Megan Metzger (86th, 20:35) and junior Emma Bohnenkamper (111th, 20:56) rounded out Warsaw’s lineup in the 178-person girls race.
“Our goal was to try and pack it up,” said Campbell, referencing a cross country term for teammates trying to stay together. “We wanted five girls under 20 (minutes). Charlene had a tremendous race ... she PRed on this course by like 50 seconds. Angie was our biggest surprise today ... 20-second PR and just went after it. That really helped our team pick up slack.
“I’m very proud of the girls. We wanted to come in and try and win it, but we had some illnesses earlier in the week. We’re happy. We needed to get our fifth runner up there. I think we were about 10 seconds away from having our No. 5 up there and winning. I’m happy, and I’m proud of the girls.”
Joining Bedke in Manchester’s girls lineup were sophomore Jaelyn Webb (54th, 20:09), seniors Tahnee Fuentes (83rd 20:33) and Clara Burdette (140th, 21:41), sophomore Katie Barker (158th, 22:17) and freshmen Sydney Diefenbaugh (159th, 22:30) and Maddy Evans (167th, 23:33).
On the boys side, Lowell had three runners finish in the top 10, leading the Red Devils to a first-place team score of 84.
Also advancing to state were West Lafayette (111), Crown Point (151), Valparaiso (160), Portage (174) and Chesterton (188).
Lake Central (191), Warsaw (209), McCutcheon (224) and LaPorte (225) rounded out the top 10 boys teams.
“We just scored too many points with our No. 4 & 5 runners,” said Warsaw boys coach Jim Mills. “There’s a lot of teams like us, they’re short on their No. 5 runner, or their No. 4 runner. We kind of felt like if we scored in the low 200s before they took the individuals out of the scoring we’d be right there. But we were way higher.”
After Hernandez, Warsaw’s next finisher was junior Lucas Howett (16:32) in 24th, followed by classmate Xavi Ramirez (16:50) in 49th.
The rest of the Tigers’ lineup included juniors Ridley Lemon (86th, 17:25), Nathaniel Gottschalk (93rd, 17:29), Justin Fleming (118th, 17:49) and Taylor Mills (130th, 18:03).
Manchester senior Drew Jones competed individually and finished 122nd in the 179-person race with a time of 17:54.
Hernandez also advanced to the state meet as a freshman last year, finishing 52nd in a time of 16:11.
In the sectional, regional and semistate this season, Hernandez has been second each time to Rans.
“He’s a good runner and he has a good mentality,” Hernandez said of Rans. “That’s what a good runner needs is a good mentality. I’m glad that I have that rival, because I think it’s going to help both of us in the future.
“My coaches tell me a lot that they see me as one of the best runners out of Warsaw, and they really want me to be a state champion, in my senior year for sure. With the help and the encouragement that they give me, I can really try and do that.”
