First-year Lady Tiger head coach Rick Ashmore said his young team didn’t play within their system, and it proved costly.
“We weren’t in system, and most of our errors came in serve reception,” he said. “Once the point got going, we did alright, but hitting errors came off of serve reception, and that’s normally one of our strong points.
“We had a little bit of tentativeness, and usually that’s not good. Our blocking and communication wasn’t what it needed to be, and knowing where they were going with the ball. We addressed that during timeouts, and it got a little better, but in key times we forgot about it.”
The Lady Tigers struggled to find their way, losing handily in the first set before falling late in the second. Warsaw came back from seven points down to win the third set and extend the match.
Concord got off to the better start in the fourth set, and the host team didn’t have another comeback in them, though not for lack of effort. Kacy Bragg led the way back for Warsaw with 20 kills in the match, most of them coming in the last two sets. She added 13 assists, nine digs, four blocks and three aces.
Junior Nikki Parrett had a dozen kills, Alexie Day had 21 digs, nine kills and three blocks and Hannah Leach had six kills, an assist and a block. Addie Dickerhoff had 17 assists.
“I knew this was going to be a great match between two great teams. Concord’s an excellent team, and I think we’re an excellent team. The level of play was well represented by both volleyball teams today,” said Ashmore.
“I thought the kids really stepped up; they’ve done everything I’ve asked them to do. We changed a little bit how things were done, and they responded to it very well. They took this loss hard, and that shows how much they care. We talk a lot about ‘are you involved in the program, are you committed to it, or are you just interested?’ At the end, I think what you saw was a group of kids who are committed to the program. They want to succeed.”
In the first semifinal, Elkhart Central came from two sets back to eliminate Northridge 19-25, 15-25, 25-20, 25-19, 15-12. The Lady Minutemen then beat the Lady Blazers 26-24, 25-20, 22-25, 27-25 for the sectional title. Concord will host LaPorte in Tuesday’s regional round.
Warsaw finished the 2016 season with a 20-14 record.
