She certainly did Thursday night.
Parrett, a junior outside hitter for the Lady Tigers, returned to action after missing two weeks and led Warsaw to a 25-19, 25-19, 25-18 win over Elkhart Memorial in Class 4A sectional action at the Tiger Den.
Parrett produced 10 kills and a dig in the victory, and provided an emotional lift as the Lady Tigers eye the program’s first sectional title since 2004.
“Emotionally, she brought us back, and she completed our team,” Ashmore said of Parrett. “The last couple weeks, we’ve had her here. But on the court, that completes our whole unit.”
Warsaw, which improved to 20-13 on the season, advanced to Saturday’s 12:30 p.m. sectional semifinal against Concord, a 25-10, 25-18, 25-10 winner over Goshen in Thursday’s first match.
Semifinal action begins Saturday at 11 a.m. when Elkhart Central (24-4), a winner over No. 5 Penn Tuesday, squares off with Northridge (21-12).
The championship match is slated for Saturday at 7 p.m.
“We took them in three, and we didn’t have a letdown,” Ashmore said of beating the Crimson Chargers. “We’ve got to worry about Concord now. I’m looking at all these other sectionals, and this one is a barn-burner of a sectional. From top to bottom, it’s a good sectional.”
The Crimson Chargers, whose season ended with a 13-21 record, advanced to the semistate last year.
Memorial won sectional titles in eight of the previous nine years, and eliminated Warsaw from postseason play in six of the past seven seasons.
The 2016 campaign, however, has been different. Thursday marked the third time this season Warsaw has beat Memorial, and the Crimson Chargers never led.
“I think they’re better than us,” longtime Memorial coach Jacquie Rost said of the Lady Tigers. “You can’t make the errors we made and beat a team that’s probably better than you offensively. Yeah, I think they’re better than us. They had too many hitters that hit well tonight, for sure.”
The Lady Tigers took it right to Memorial in the first game, racing out to an 8-1 lead and setting the tone.
The teams were tied just three times Thursday night – at 1-1 in the first and third games, and at 5-5 in the second set.
The match simply belonged to Warsaw.
“We did a lot of really positive things,” said Ashmore. “Both of our setters really moved the ball around to the hitters. We had a lot of hits that were 1-on-1, which is a credit to the setters moving the ball.”
Sophomore Addie Dickerhoff had 23 assists and 12 digs for the Lady Tigers, while Erin Peugh tallied 25 digs, two aces and an assist.
Junior Alexie Day led Warsaw in kills with 11, while classmate Hanna Leach and sophomore Kacy Bragg had eight each.
Leach was tops in aces with four.
For Memorial, senior Krystal Grubb tallied 27 assists, while senior Mackenzie Williams led in kills with 10.
Junior Brooke Troyer led the Crimson Chargers in digs with eight, while junior Morgan Gonoski and Williams finished with seven each.
