WINONA LAKE – A second-half goal from Grace College’s women’s soccer team lifted the Lady Lancers to a 1-0 win over Crossroads League rival Mt. Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday.
Flavia Faria had the game-winning goal in the 73rd minute, keeping the Lady Lancers (5-6-3, 4-2-2 CL) in fourth place in the league standings.
Wednesday’s match at 1st Source Bank Field was evenly played with Grace holding a 13-10 advantage in shots.
The Cougars (9-8, 3-5 CL) started each half sharply, producing the majority of their chances early. MVNU had most of its shots from long range, testing Grace goalkeeper Abby Schue with six shots on goal.
Twenty minutes into the match, Maile Grout made a magnificent run through the midfield. She beat several defenders and unleashed a curling shot from the edge of the penalty box that forced a diving save by the Cougars’ goalkeeper.
Grace’s attack slowly built up a few more chances in the first half. Kristen Bellinger had a deep shot that sailed wide, but neither team was able to score before halftime.
In the second half, MVNU started the period with momentum. The Cougars took four shots in the opening 12 minutes of the period, but Schue was rarely challenged from the long attempts.
Grace’s possession began to take shape midway into the half, which also served to limit MVNU’s chances.
The Lady Lancers’ game-winning moment came in the 73rd minute. Marina Tolczyk sent in a dangerous corner kick to the near post. Hannah Miller flicked a header toward the Cougars’ goal which was saved. Faria put herself in prime position for the rebound and buried the volley at the 78:47 mark for her first goal as a Lady Lancer.
Grace continued to press over the final third of the match and seemed to wear out the Cougars. Grace outshot MVNU 3-1 over the last 15 minutes.
Schue had six saves in goal for Grace, recording her seventh shutout of the season. She was defended well by the backline of Kristelle Jadoo, Aubrey Feipel, Carlie Salinas and McKenna Cruz.
Meredith Hollar led Grace with three shots, and Clair Snodgrass had two shots off the bench.
The Lady Lancers can secure the No. 4 seed with a win at Goshen in their final match of the season on Saturday. The top four seeds in next week’s league tournament will host a quarterfinal match.
