A year ago, friends and supporters held a rally in support of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality rights here in Warsaw. We faced opposition and different views, but we all have something in common – our desire for a better Warsaw community.
In order to make Warsaw better, we should have affordable housing, diversity in the workplace, eradicate homelessness, affordable healthcare, end discrimination at our local schools and sporting events, respect woman, the poor, elderly, Muslims, Latinos, blacks, Asians, LGBT, children, men and disabled in our community. Even respect those of faith and those that believe in no God. In order to grow and attract new talent, we must work with others that might not share our same lifestyle or view points.
A year ago, I had a woman approach me at our last rally and said her son was gay and going through what we are doing. I almost cried and thought, “Wow,” we are making a difference in this community! This moment is why I will not quit till Warsaw City enacts full equal protections in employment, housing and hate crimes for lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender. Several other cities in Indiana have made progress and it is time Warsaw did the same!
This year I am proud to announce – with the support of the Warsaw mayor, Warsaw Police Department and Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department – we are holding our second Pro Equality Hoosiers Rally II Oct. 29, 2016, from noon to 4 p.m. in downtown Warsaw on the courthouse steps. We will have motivational speakers on various equality topics, singers, music, children's play area, voter registration, food/clothing/furniture donations to Our Father’s House for the homeless. Our Father’s House will pick up donations after the rally. Free wedding cake, food, drinks and candy for little ones will be served at the rally.
Please join us with your colorful rainbow gear, favorite political candidates’ signs and unite for equal rights for LGBT in Warsaw, Indiana. We will be accepting donations for the rally to build a Warsaw LGBT Resource Center and start a PFLAG chapter.
Thank you, Warsaw, for allowing us to make a difference in your community!
