CULVER – “This is the week we wait for.”
Those were the words from Warsaw boys cross country coach Jim Mills Saturday, referencing the anticipation each year for the semistate.
Warsaw girls coach Matt Campbell shared the mindset.
After extending their respective regional championship streaks at Culver Academies, the ninth-ranked Lady Tigers and 25th-ranked Tigers now turn their attention to the New Prairie Semistate.
The 20-team semistate is slated for Saturday, and the top six teams, as well as the top 10 individuals not on an advancing team, will qualify for the state finals in Terre Haute on Oct. 29.
The Lady Tigers are looking for their sixth consecutive state finals berth, while the Warsaw boys are hoping to advance for the first time since 2013.
“We’ve just got to get back to Terre Haute,” said Mills.?“We’ve missed it. We only had individuals there last year, and we’re trying to get back down there as a team.”
The Warsaw boys had all five of their scoring runners finish in the top 12 at the regional, led by the second-place finish of Zeb Hernandez (16:25).
Lucas Howett (17:00) finished sixth in the 89-person boys race, followed by teammates Xavi Ramirez (9th, 17:22), Taylor Mills (10th, 17:26), Nathaniel Gottschalk (12th, 17:35), Ridley Lemon (21st, 17:48) and Justin Fleming (29th, 18:21).
The Tigers won their fifth consecutive boys regional title, doing so with 39 points. Culver Academies was a distant second with 75 and was followed in the top five by Rochester (111), Plymouth (115) and Logansport (153).
Western was right on Logansport’s heels for the final advancing spot, but finished sixth with 154 points, while Caston (179), Lewis Cass (192), Kokomo (195) and Winamac (196) rounded out the field.
Caston’s Mitchell Rans was the boys race winner in a time of 16:04.
While the regional championship streak is nice, Mills admitted the semistate is what his team trains for.
“This is the meet we’ve been training for all year,” Mills said of the semistate. “We’ve got to tighten it up some more ... there’s seven ranked teams in the top 25 that’ll be at New Prairie. We’re the seventh one, but we beat three of those teams at the New Prairie Invite. It’s whoever shows up Saturday. I’ll be a nervous wreck, my blood pressure is already off the chart. This is the week we wait for.”
Among the 20 boys squads that will compete at New Prairie are ranked teams Lowell (5th), West Lafayette (13th), Portage (14th), LaPorte (21st), Valparaiso (24th) and Warsaw (25th).
Manchester’s boys team had six runners compete at the regional Saturday, but they did so as competitors who advanced from the sectional as individuals.
Drew Jones led the Squires with a 27th-place time of 18:20.
The rest of Manchester’s lineup included Ethan Davis (51st, 18:57), Ben Reichenbach (56th, 19:06), Hunter Miller (59th, 19:18), Reece Adamiec (71st, 19:44) and Montgomery Pattison (20:23).
Triton also had runners competing as individuals in the boys race. Bailey Watkins led the Trojans with a 33rd-place time of 18:30. He was followed by teammates Russell Reichard (40th, 18:35) and Josiah Page (61st, 19:20).
In the 10-team, 90-person girls race Saturday, a pair of local teams advanced to the semistate, as Warsaw extended its regional championship streak to four years and Manchester finished second.
The Lady Tigers, led by race winner Mia Beckham (18:47), won with 30 points.
Manchester, led by the third-place finish of Rae Bedke (19:07), scored 101 points.
Maconaquah (112), Western (117) and Lewis Cass (136) grabbed the final three semistate berths, while Rochester (142), Northwestern (163), Culver Academies (163), Logansport (196) and Plymouth (258) rounded out the field.
“Mia has been our No. 1 since last season,” said Campbell. “We’ve been kind of holding her back a lot this season. Today was a good race for her to break out and get back in the groove. I think that’s a PR for her on this course. Times were slow today, so I’m pretty happy. We’re in a good spot with Mia. There’s two big meets left, and I think she’s ready to go.”
Warsaw’s Allison Miller (19:38) finished fifth, followed by teammates Anna Craig (6th, 19:47), Charlene Orr (7th, 20:04), Angie Sanchez-Vigil (13th, 20:27), Megan Metzger (16th, 20:38) and Remi Beckham (29th, 21:31).
“Going into today’s meet we felt confident about winning it,” said Campbell. “Our goal was to put six or seven in the top 12. We only had five in the top 13. We need a No. 5. We need somebody to step up. We have the ability. The No. 5 runner will be huge at the semistate.”
Among the 20 teams in the girls semistate race will be eight top 25 teams, including Warsaw (9th), Valparaiso (11th), West Lafayette (12th), Lake Central (13th), LaPorte (16th), Lowell (19th), Crown Point (23rd) and Munster (25th).
To go with Bedke’s third-place finish, Manchester had two other girls finish in the top 25 at the regional – Tahnee Fuentes (12th, 20:26) and Jaelyn Webb (23rd, 21:04).
The rest of the Lady Squires’ lineup included Clara Burdette (30th, 21:36), Sydney Diefenbaugh (54th, 22:27), Katie Barker (56th, 22:30) and Maddy Evans (77th, 23:57).
Five girls from Triton competed as individuals.
Whytnie Miller led the Lady Trojans with a 45th-place time of 22:18, crossing the line with teammate and 46th-place finisher Briana Wilhite (22:18).
The rest of Triton’s lineup included Baylee McIntire (55th, 22:28), Michaela Best (66th, 23:15) and Aimee Gladieux (83rd, 24:39).
The New Prairie Semistate is scheduled to begin with the girls race at 11 am EST.
