No. 1 Penn Storms Past Warsaw

GOSHEN – Mother Nature wasn’t the only storm that blew through the Maple City Wednesday evening.
In a Class 2A girls soccer regional semifinal that was played in driving winds and rain at Goshen High School, the No. 1 Penn Lady Kingsmen – junior Kristina Lynch in particular – were simply too much for the No. 18 Warsaw Lady Tigers to weather.
Lynch, a Florida State University commit, scored three goals in the first 16 minutes of the 80-minute match and later assisted on two others as Penn led 6-0 at halftime and won 7-1.
“There’s a reason they’re ranked No. 1 in the state and ranked in the nation,” said Warsaw coach Peter Lucht, whose team fell 4-0 to Penn during a tournament in Aug. “We didn’t do ourselves any favors in the first half. They’re a great team, so credit to them.”
Lynch, who now has 35 goals and 17 assists in Penn’s 19 games this season, scored in the sixth, 10th and 16th minutes.
She assisted freshman Grace Szklarek’s goal in the 19th minute, and then assisted sophomore Maya Lacognato in the 37th minute.
Lynch’s assists sandwiched an unassisted goal by junior McKenzie Blankenbaker.
“We had a plan, and we didn’t actually execute our plan at all,” Lucht said of his team’s defense of Lynch. “I would have liked to seen what would happen had we (executed our plan), but she’s a great player.
“They’ve got two Division I recruits in No. 24 (Lynch) and No. 7 (senior Aylissa Trosper, Butler University), their forward and center-mid. They’re a great team.”
The teams scored one goal each in the second half, as senior Alexis Marks pushed Penn’s advantage to 7-0 with an unassisted goal in the 63rd minute, and Warsaw sophomore Dayle Harvey ended the shutout with the Lady Tigers’ lone goal in the 65th minute.
“Today the girls saw that there was another level,” said Lucht. “We have had a decent season, and certainly had some things to celebrate, but we saw tonight that the bar is higher.
“While the loss certainly stings tonight, I am hoping that some good can come of it as we know what is before us and what level we need to be at. I am proud of the girls for fighting harder in the second half. Anna Grill played a solid second half, and Delaney Taylor and Brenna Buhrt never gave up.
“Despite the fact we had a good season, this was a statement that we are not at the top yet. When it comes to our offseason open gyms/fields, we have to opportunity to improve ourselves. We believe as a coaching staff that any person not committed to that process is saying that they are comfortable with a 6-0 half and a 7-1 game.”
Warsaw finished its season with a 16-5 record.
Penn improved to 18-0-1 and advanced to Saturday’s regional final against South Bend St. Joe (12-5-2).
St. Joe advanced with a 1-0 win over Goshen (14-4-2) in Wednesday’s first semifinal, as senior Nicole Nemeth scored in the 72nd minute.
