Triton Spikers Sweep Lady Warriors

SYRACUSE – After winning the first set handily and taking a 9-0 lead in the second, it looked like the rout was on in Triton’s volleyball match at Wawasee Tuesday night.
The Lady Warriors fought back to tie the set and eventually take a 21-20 lead, but the Lady Trojans scored five of the last six points to take the set. Triton then pulled away in the third to complete a 25-17, 25-22, 25-16 sweep of Wawasee at the Hardwood Tepee.
Triton head coach Gayle Perry said that with a big lead, she did substitute a bit more liberally, and was missing some players due to illness. But she didn’t need to say a lot to her team in a timeout called midway through the second set. Perry said she and her team have grown to the point where she trusts them to make decisions within the match.
“We’ve grown tremendously since we started this year,” she said. “I don’t have to say much anymore when they are on the court. They know when it’s time to get busy; hey, sideout and whatever.
“We subbed out quite a bit, and we had a couple of kids out sick, and another kid who stayed home sick. With all that, I felt good about how we played as a team. When you play as a team, you can do anything.”
Perry noticed Wawasee’s back line moving ground in anticipation of a kill attempt. The adjustment was to dump the ball just over the hands of blockers so the ball lands just behind them, out of range of the back line. Triton junior Hannah Wanemacher worked that strategy to near perfection in the latter half of the match.
“We’ve been working all season on this dump thing with Hannah,” Perry said. “Last year, they dumped because they felt like it. Now, we need to learn there is a reason to dump.
“They play well enough now I can just watch the other team and see where the holes are. I give them the information, and one of our goals is to learn to make adjustments better. That means I give them the info, and they pick and choose and make decisions on what to do with it.”
Wawasee’s main point of emphasis has been working on earning its points, rather than relying on mistakes by the opposition.
“Something we’re trying with my team for this last haul of the season is trying to change the mindset of the way we play the game, instead of focusing on everything that doesn’t happen the right way for us to win a match,” Wawasee head coach Kayla Riptorella said. “If we lose, a lot of my girls will focus on everything we did wrong. The beginning of last week, we started focusing on ‘well, what did we do right? What points did we earn in that set, whether getting a kill, an ace or block, what did we earn?’
“Having to remind them from time to time that’s what we’re focusing on, that was our change between set one and set two. Earning our points. We earned, I think, 12 points in the first set, and finished out with 16 in the second. So it’s driving toward earning our points; finding a way to earn a point is what my hitters and my players are focused on right now.”
Nichole Sechrist had 13 kills, Wanemacher had 28 assists and 14 digs, and Courtney Jennings had 14 digs for Triton. The Lady Trojans take a 19-10 record into their regular-season finale at Plymouth on Thursday.
Wawasee (6-19) got nine kills from senior Seaquinn Bright, and 26 digs from Liz Clouse. The Lady Warriors will host Northridge in the regular season and Northern Lakes Conference finale Thursday.

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves. Each of the four players were asked the same eight questions. Below are each of their answers.

Town of Claypool
