Brandon Wolf, site manager of Skillman, and Cary Groninger, president of G & G Hauling and Excavating, presented their findings and recommendations concerning the pond at the board’s meeting Monday. The original plans called for filling the pond in with concrete. Groninger and Wolf said that the area continues to hold 6 inches of water and that concrete would likely crack within five to 10 years due to freezing and thawing.
Wolf said the standing water would be a “muddy mess” and suggested several other options. They said the problem was discovered after digging and was unexpected. The board will make a decision on final fencing at a later date. Currently, the area is fenced with a snow fence.
Also Monday, Assistant Superintendent Blaine Conley said 27 teachers, English as a Second Language assistants and administrators have formed a Professional Learning Community where they meet four times each year to study “Overcoming the Achievement Gap.”
Conley noted that 45 teachers had attended a summer conference on the course work as well.
Conley said, “We have to help all kids.”
He also shared their success in providing ESL services to students who enter the school corporation with little or no English language skills.
The board voted unanimously to adopt the 2017 budget, Capital Projects Plan and School Bus Replacement Fund. Hearings of the items were held in September.
The total of the budgets is $23,052,636 including General Fund ($15,555.790), Debt Service ($2,632,967), Capital Projects Fund ($2,678,299), Transportation ($1,880,580) and Bus Replacement Fund ($305,000).
Student Representative Jonathan Engle informed the board that students have organized a school board candidate forum Oct. 27 open to the public. The students have prepared questions for candidates who will be on the November ballot. The forum will be held at the Akron Community Building.
