After a pair of 4-0 outcomes in Thursday’s sectional semifinals at Warsaw Community High School, one local girls soccer team advanced to Saturday’s title tilt, while another saw its season end.

The Wawasee Lady Warriors gave up two goals in each half and fell to NorthWood in the evening’s first 80-minute contest, ending their season with a 5-13 record.

NorthWood (7-7-2), which beat Wawasee 4-1 last week, will play Warsaw in Saturday’s 2 p.m. championship game.

The Lady Tigers, ranked 18th in the final Class 2A poll, scored three goals in a span of 11 minutes in the second half, improving to 15-4 with a win over Plymouth (6-8-2).

Warsaw won sectional titles in five consecutive seasons before a disappointing loss to Culver Academies last year.

The Lady Tigers are heavily favored to win Saturday, having defeated NorthWood 5-0 earlier this season.

“I don’t want our girls to underestimate anybody,” said Warsaw coach Peter Lucht. “Soccer’s a funny game where any team can beat anybody. We have to come prepared. I meant what I said Tuesday, when I felt like Culver Academies was the other best team in the group. That felt like a final on Tuesday, that was a battle. Honestly, with how hard that match was, I was a little bit worried about how we were gonna come in tonight. Plymouth can be a physical team, they’re certainly fit, but our girls were steady.

“It’s a sectional championship game, so you know that NorthWood is gonna try and do their best to stop us, and we’re gonna try and do our best to not let them.”

In the semifinal win over Plymouth, a game in which Warsaw dominated possession throughout, the Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on a Brenna Buhrt goal that was assisted by Julie Frazzetta.

Despite the number of chances, that was the only goal Warsaw scored in the first 48 minutes.

And then the Lady Tigers opened the floodgates, as Delaney Taylor scored in the 49th minute on a Buhrt assist, Frazzetta converted a penalty kick in the 59th minute and Taylor scored her second goal a minute later with the help of Brenna Shipley.

The three-goal effort in 11 minutes broke Plymouth’s back, though Warsaw had already dominated play up to that point.

“Our first match with Plymouth was similar in that we dominated possession, dominated opportunities,” said Lucht, whose team beat Plymouth 2-1 on Aug. 23. “They’ve got a good goalkeeper ... I told Plymouth that after the first match. She covered one really well on that high ball that Breck (Jackson) put in the opposite of the 90, but sometimes we made it easy on her, too. We kept shooting fairly central ... we didn’t test her enough side to side like we should have.”

In the first semifinal game Thursday, NorthWood scored a pair of early goals against Wawasee, as Avery Bontrager netted one in the 10th minute and Savannah Freenstra followed suit in the 15th minute.

Betsy Nunemaker pushed the Lady Panthers’ advantage to 3-0 in the 43rd minute of play, and then Tatiana Guillen accounted for the final score with a goal in the 78th minute.

Much like Warsaw did to Plymouth, NorthWood dominated possession against Wawasee.

“I don’t know if we were nervous ... we didn’t come out great the first 20 minutes,” said Wawasee coach Doug Heinisch. “They kind of took it to us, and they took control of the game. I thought we did better the last 20 minutes of the first half, and we played better in the second half.

“But, for us, we’ve increased our wins, increased our goals scored, and we’ve been more competitive overall, which is great. We’ve got a lot to do, too. We’ve made some progress this year. We’ll lose some good players, a lot of goals, but it was a fun season.”
